Jack's Tacos

The cult-favorite 2-for-$1.99 Jack's Tacos

No other major U.S. fast-food chain serves Jack's Tacos — and they've been on the board since the 1950s. Order two, hand over $1.99 and change, walk out fed.

The taco itself is a folded corn-tortilla shell, fried with the seasoned beef already inside it, then opened at the top and stuffed with shredded iceberg lettuce, a slice of American cheese and a thin, vinegar-forward taco sauce. The shell goes slightly soggy at the bottom and crispy-flaky on the outside — a texture that's nothing like a Taco Bell Crunchy Taco and that copycat recipes have failed to recreate for decades.

The economics are the other half of the legend. Two tacos for $1.99 means Jack is selling each taco for under a dollar — cheaper than any single item on McDonald's, Burger King or Wendy's menus. They're a loss-leader by design; the goal is to get you in the drive-thru late at night, where you'll usually add fries and a drink.

This is why Jack in the Box has appeared on Anthony Bourdain shows, in late-night ranking videos, and in Reddit threads with titles like "Jack's tacos are not good. I love them." The brand-loyal fan base for this specific item is unusually deep for a fast-food side.

A few markets price the 2-pack at $2.49 instead of $1.99 — California, the Northeast and Hawaii most commonly.

  • 2 Tacos: $1.99 — the signature
  • 3 Tacos: $2.99 — better per-unit value
  • Loaded Taco: $2.49 — supreme build (sour cream, 3-cheese, tomato)
  • Loaded Nuggets: $5.49 — same "loaded" treatment, popcorn chicken
  • Taco Combo: $5.99 — 2 Tacos + small Curly Fries + drink
  • Per taco unit cost: ~$1.00 (cheapest hot item in fast food)
All-day breakfast since 1991

Jack in the Box pioneered all-day breakfast — decades before McDonald's tried it

McDonald's rolled out all-day breakfast nationally in October 2015 and largely walked it back during 2020. Jack in the Box has served the full breakfast menu 24/7 since 1991 and never stopped. The Breakfast Jack is on the same board as the Jumbo Jack at 3 AM.

The eclectic menu mix

Burgers, tacos, breakfast and Egg Rolls — on the same board

Most U.S. fast-food chains pick a lane: burgers (McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's), chicken (Chick-fil-A, Popeyes, KFC), or Mexican (Taco Bell). Jack in the Box deliberately doesn't. The board carries American burgers, Mexican-style tacos, Asian-style Egg Rolls and all-day breakfast simultaneously — a holdover from Jack's drive-thru-only origin, when the bet was that one car would order for two or three people who wanted different things.

Late-night & 24/7

The original late-night fast-food brand

Most Jack in the Box locations are open 24 hours a day, especially urban and freeway-adjacent drive-thrus on the West Coast and in Texas. The full menu — burgers, tacos, breakfast, Munchie Meals, shakes — is available at 3 AM the same way it's available at 1 PM.

The Munchie Meal was invented in 2013 specifically for the post-bar daypart. It's the only major fast-food product designed and marketed for late-night specifically — not "available late-night," but built for it. The four-item structure (entrée + two sides + drink) is engineered to be heavy enough to count as dinner-at-2-AM at a single price point of $8.49.

This identity is why the chain still skews so heavily California, Texas and the Southwest: those are the markets with the most late-night driving, the most freeway-adjacent drive-thrus, and the longest history of Jack's late-night marketing.

  • 24/7 at most U.S. locations

  • All-day breakfast since 1991

About these prices. Pricing shown is national-average as of May 2026, sourced from publicly documented Jack in the Box pricing. The chain is roughly 80%+ franchisee-owned and skews heavily West Coast and Texas, so pricing is set franchisee-by-franchisee — single-item swings of $0.50–$1.50 between two stores in the same metro are common, more so in California and the Northeast. Dietary & allergen guide

Vegetarian, lower-calorie and customizable orders at Jack

Jack in the Box does not carry a certified-vegetarian sub-menu the way Taco Bell does, but several sides and customizations work as vegetarian: Curly Fries, Mini Pancakes, French Toast Sticks, Mozzarella Sticks, Stuffed Jalapeños, Hash Browns and the OREO/Vanilla/Strawberry shakes (note: contain dairy/egg).

For vegans: the chain has been slower than Taco Bell or Burger King to launch a dedicated plant-based protein. Cross-contact in the fryer is universal — Curly Fries share oil with chicken strips. Confirm with the restaurant if you have a serious allergy.

Cross-contact possible. Confirm with the restaurant if you have a serious allergy.

  • Cheapest vegetarian-as-served: Curly Fries small ($2.79), Hash Browns ($2.49)
  • Vegetarian sides: Onion Rings ($3.49), Mozzarella Sticks ($3.49), Stuffed Jalapeños ($3.49)
  • Vegetarian breakfast: French Toast Sticks ($2.49), Mini Pancakes ($3.49), Hash Browns ($2.49)

Ordering tips

How to save the most money at Jack in the Box

Best per-dollar

Buy the 2 Tacos

At $1.99 for two tacos, no other menu item in U.S. fast food beats the per-dollar value. Add a small Curly Fries and a small drink for the $5.99 Taco Combo — cheapest brand-signature combo on the board.

App

Install the Jack in the Box app

The Jack Pack rewards program offers a recurring Jumbo Jack BOGO, daily free-item drops and birthday rewards. The app routinely beats in-store pricing by $1.00–$3.00 on combos. Worth installing if you visit even monthly.

Combo logic

Munchie Meal vs. à la carte

If you're already ordering an entrée + side + drink, the $8.49 Munchie Meal adds a second side for usually cheaper than à la carte adding that second side. The math only works because Munchie Meals were built as a loss leader for late-night.

Free swap

Sourdough swap

Several burgers can be ordered "on sourdough" instead of the sesame bun at no upcharge, depending on store. Worth asking — the grilled sourdough is half of what makes the Sourdough Jack good.

Late-night

Order Munchie Meals after 9 PM

Munchie Meal pricing and item lineups are most aggressive after 9 PM in many markets — some app deals are time-gated to the late-night window.

Family

Mini Tacos 15-pack for a group

$5.99 for 15 Mini Tacos is the cheapest "feed three people" item on the board. Pair with a Curly Fries Large ($3.99) and a shareable drink and the per-person cost stays under $4.

Locations

Where to find a Jack in the Box

Jack in the Box operates roughly 2,200 restaurants in the United States, concentrated heavily in the West Coast, Southwest and Texas. California has the densest network of stores, followed by Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Washington and Oregon. The chain has been gradually expanding eastward — Tennessee, Kentucky and Florida markets opened in 2023–2025.

Most stores are franchisee-owned, the chain is overwhelmingly drive-thru-and-walk-up format (very few dine-in seats compared to McDonald's), and 24-hour operation is the norm in core markets. Use the official store locator on jackinthebox.com/locations for exact hours.

About Jack in the Box

The original drive-thru chain — and still the most eclectic menu in fast food.

Robert O. Peterson opened the first Jack in the Box in San Diego, California in 1951 as a drive-thru-only burger stand with a clown-headed Jack figurine and a two-way speaker built into it. The drive-thru format pre-dated McDonald's drive-thru by two decades. Over the next 70+ years, the chain stayed deliberately eclectic — burgers, tacos, breakfast, Egg Rolls and Mini Tacos all on the same board — and built its identity around late-night service, all-day breakfast, and value items the rest of fast food doesn't try to replicate.

The brand "killed off" its original clown mascot in a 1980 marketing stunt (literally blew up the Jack figurine in a TV ad) then reintroduced Jack — now the rubber-headed, suit-wearing CEO of the company — in 1995. The "Cracking Up" slogan, the late-night Munchie Meals (launched 2013), and the cult-favorite 2-for-$1.99 tacos define the modern brand. Headquarters: San Diego, California.

Common questions

Jack in the Box menu — frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions people most commonly ask about Jack in the Box's menu, prices, all-day breakfast and Munchie Meals.

How much are 2 Tacos at Jack in the Box?

Jack's signature 2 Tacos run about $1.99 at most U.S. locations as of May 2026 — one of the cheapest brand-defining orders in fast food. They're a fried, folded corn-tortilla shell filled with seasoned beef, American cheese, shredded lettuce and a tomato-forward taco sauce. The 3-pack is around $2.99 and the Loaded Taco (sour cream, three-cheese, tomato) is about $2.49. California, the Northeast and Hawaii sometimes price the 2-pack at $2.49.

What is a Munchie Meal at Jack in the Box?

A Munchie Meal is a combo meal Jack in the Box created for the late-night daypart — typically four items (entrée + two sides + a drink) for around $8.49. Current lineups include the Spicy Nacho Munchie Meal, the Stacked Grilled Cheeseburger Munchie Meal, the Loaded Nuggets Munchie Meal, the Spicy Sauced & Loaded Munchie Meal and the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger Munchie Meal. The format is unique to Jack — no other major chain markets a four-item late-night-specific combo at this price.

Is Jack in the Box open 24 hours?

Many Jack in the Box locations are open 24 hours, especially urban and freeway-adjacent drive-thrus on the West Coast and in Texas. The chain has built its identity around the late-night daypart since the 1970s — Munchie Meals exist specifically for the post-midnight crowd. Hours are set franchisee-by-franchisee, so confirm with the store locator on jackinthebox.com before planning a 3 AM run.

What's in a Sourdough Jack?

The Sourdough Jack ($5.99) is a beef patty, hickory-smoked bacon, two slices of Swiss-style cheese, tomato, lettuce and a red-onion mayo on grilled sourdough bread. It's a Jack in the Box exclusive build — no other major U.S. burger chain serves a sourdough-bread signature, which is why long-time fans buy Jack specifically for this sandwich.

Does Jack in the Box have all-day breakfast?

Yes — Jack in the Box has served breakfast all day since 1991, decades before McDonald's tried it. The full breakfast menu (Breakfast Jack, Loaded Breakfast Sandwich, Ultimate Breakfast Sandwich, breakfast burritos, croissant sandwiches, French Toast Sticks, Hash Browns, pancakes) is available 24/7 at most locations.

How much is a Jumbo Jack in 2026?

The Jumbo Jack is about $4.99 nationally as of May 2026, with cheese it's around $5.49. The Jumbo Jack Combo (Jumbo Jack + Curly Fries + drink) runs roughly $8.49. California and the Pacific Northwest sometimes price the single Jumbo Jack at $5.99–$6.49. The Jr. Jumbo Jack ($2.99) is the cheapest path to the same recipe.

Why does Jack in the Box have Egg Rolls?

Jack in the Box's Egg Rolls have been on the menu for decades and are part of what makes the brand uniquely eclectic — burgers, tacos, breakfast, Asian-style Egg Rolls and Mexican-style Mini Tacos all on the same board. The 3-piece runs about $3.99 and the 5-piece around $5.99, served with a sweet-and-sour dipping sauce. They're filled with cabbage, carrot, celery and seasoned pork — a real egg roll, not a fast-food approximation.

Is Jack in the Box cheaper than McDonald's?

At the very bottom of the menu, Jack in the Box is cheaper — Jack's 2 Tacos at $1.99 and Breakfast Slider at $1.99 have no equivalent at McDonald's, where the cheapest single item is a $2.79 McChicken or hamburger. Combo pricing is closer: the $8.49 Munchie Meal vs. the $5 McValue Meal Deal puts McDonald's ahead on combo entry price, but Jack's combo carries four items vs. McDonald's three. Jumbo Jack ($4.99) is slightly cheaper than a Big Mac ($5.99) on a like-for-like basis.

Where is Jack in the Box from?

Jack in the Box was founded in San Diego, California in 1951 by Robert O. Peterson, originally as a drive-thru-only concept with a speaker built into a clown-headed Jack sculpture out front. The chain still skews heavily West Coast and Texas — California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada and Washington carry the highest store density. Corporate headquarters remains in San Diego.

What time does Jack in the Box stop serving breakfast?

It doesn't — Jack in the Box serves the full breakfast menu 24/7 at most locations. The Breakfast Jack, breakfast burritos, croissant sandwiches, French Toast Sticks and Hash Browns are available any time of day. This has been the case since 1991, making Jack the original all-day-breakfast brand in U.S. fast food.
