Visiting tips

How to have the best meal at Circolo Popolare

Book ahead

Reserve 2–3 weeks in advance

Circolo Popolare is one of London's most popular Italian restaurants. Weekend evenings go in minutes when bookings open. Midweek lunch is the easiest slot to get on short notice.

Must-order

Order the tiramisu first

The tiramisu tower (£26) is made to order and takes a little time. Tell your server at the start of the meal — that way it arrives at the right moment without any wait.

Sharing style

Order to share

The menu works best when ordered communally. Two or three antipasti, a couple of pastas, a pizza and a shared dessert covers a table of two well — three courses each can add up quickly.

Drinks

Arrive early for a cocktail

The bar area at Circolo Popolare is worth lingering in. Arrive 15 minutes before your booking and enjoy a Spritz or Negroni — it sets the mood for the meal ahead.

Dietary

Good for vegetarians

Several pasta dishes, all the pizzas, most of the antipasti and all desserts can be ordered vegetarian. Inform the restaurant of any dietary needs when you book.

Getting there

Tottenham Court Road tube

The restaurant is a 5-minute walk from Tottenham Court Road station (Central and Elizabeth lines) and Goodge Street station (Northern line). Located on Rathbone Place in Fitzrovia.

About Circolo Popolare

London's most theatrical Italian dining room — by Big Mamma.

Circolo Popolare opened in 2019 at 40–41 Rathbone Place, Fitzrovia, as part of the Big Mamma group's London expansion. Big Mamma — founded by Victor Lugger and Tigrane Seydoux in Paris in 2013 — builds Italian restaurants that are as much about atmosphere and visual spectacle as they are about the food. The name means "popular circle" in Italian, a nod to neighbourhood gatherings over food and wine.

The décor is the most immediately striking feature: walls of climbing plants, chandeliers, mosaic floors and an overwhelming density of Italian kitsch. It's one of the most photographed restaurant interiors in London. But the food — handmade pasta, wood-fired pizza, the tiramisu tower — has substance behind the spectacle.

Big Mamma's London portfolio also includes Gloria (Coal Drops Yard), Ave Mario (Covent Garden), Carlotta (Marylebone) and Jacuzzi (South Kensington).

The showstopper tiramisu tower is £26 and large enough for 2–4 guests to share. A 12.5% discretionary service charge is added to the bill.

Is Circolo Popolare part of the Big Mamma group?

Yes. Circolo Popolare is one of the Big Mamma group's London restaurants, opened in Fitzrovia in 2019. Big Mamma operates Italian restaurants across London (Carlotta, Gloria, Ave Mario, Bocca di Lupo-adjacent concepts), Paris, Barcelona, Milan, Lyon and other European cities. Each venue has a distinct theme; Circolo Popolare is known for its extravagant, maximalist décor.

What is the famous tiramisu tower at Circolo Popolare?

The tiramisu tower (£26) is Circolo Popolare's signature dessert — a generous multi-layered tiramisu built tall in a glass and dusted with dark cocoa, served as a sharing dessert for 2–4 people. It's one of London's most photographed restaurant desserts and it's strongly recommended to order it at the start of the meal so there's no wait at the end.

Do I need to book a table at Circolo Popolare?

Yes — Circolo Popolare is consistently one of London's most in-demand Italian restaurants and walk-ins are very rarely available, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. Bookings open several weeks in advance and peak slots go quickly. Book via the Big Mamma website or OpenTable. Some same-day cancellations become available late afternoon — check the booking page on the day.

Where is Circolo Popolare located in London?

Circolo Popolare is at 40–41 Rathbone Place, Fitzrovia, London W1T 1HX. The nearest London Underground stations are Tottenham Court Road (Central and Elizabeth lines, ~5-minute walk) and Goodge Street (Northern line, ~5-minute walk). The restaurant is also easily walkable from Oxford Street and Soho.

Is there a vegetarian or vegan menu at Circolo Popolare?

Yes. Circolo Popolare has a good selection of vegetarian dishes including burrata, crocchette, bruschetta, Cacio e Pepe pasta, Pappardelle al Tartufo, Gnocchi al Pomodoro, multiple vegetarian pizzas, Melanzane alla Parmigiana and all the desserts. Vegan options include bruschetta, focaccia and the side dishes. Inform your server about dietary requirements when booking — the kitchen can often adapt dishes on request.

What are the must-order dishes at Circolo Popolare?

Most-recommended dishes based on guest reviews: the Tiramisu Tower (£26, order immediately), Tagliatelle al Ragù Bolognese (£19) or Spaghetti alle Vongole (£22) for pasta, Diavola or Prosciutto e Rucola pizza for wood-fired pizza, and the Burrata con Pomodori to start. The cocktail list — particularly the Spritz and Negroni — is also highly rated.

Does Circolo Popolare accept walk-ins?

Circolo Popolare is a booking-heavy restaurant. Walk-ins are occasionally available at the bar or if there are same-day cancellations, but this is not reliable for large groups. It's best to book at least 2–3 weeks in advance for evenings, especially Thursday–Saturday. Lunch and early weekday slots are somewhat easier to book on shorter notice.
