About Phil's Fish Market

From a 250 sq. ft. fish stall to a world-famous cioppino landmark.

Phil DiGirolamo opened the original Fish Market at Moss Landing in 1982 in a 250-square-foot industrial space on the waterfront. The restaurant built its reputation slowly on one dish: his grandmother Mama Nina's cioppino recipe — a tomato-based seafood stew with seven fresh-catch Monterey Bay ingredients that became the house specialty and a community institution.

National fame arrived in 2009 when Phil beat celebrity chef Bobby Flay in a cioppino cook-off on Food Network's Throwdown!. BBC Travel subsequently named Phil's one of the five best beach restaurants in the world — the only U.S. entry on the list. The restaurant operated in Moss Landing for 40 years before relocating in 2022 to a historic 1869 schoolhouse in Castroville, three miles from the original location, continuing to operate as both a full-service eatery and a working fish market serving Monterey County.
