About Zingerman's Deli

Ann Arbor's most celebrated deli, since 1982.

Ari Weinzweig and Paul Saginaw opened Zingerman's Deli on March 15, 1982, in a small building at the corner of Detroit and Kingsley Streets in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They modeled it on the great Jewish delis of New York, Chicago and Detroit, with the intention of serving food they would actually want to eat: hand-baked bread, freshly cut meat, real pickles, and carefully sourced specialty foods.

Over four decades, that original vision has expanded into the Zingerman's Community of Businesses — Bakehouse, Creamery, Roadhouse, Coffee Company, Events and more — while the deli itself has stayed resolutely in its original building. Bon Appétit called it "the best deli in America." Food & Wine, the New York Times and countless others have made the trip to Ann Arbor specifically for the sandwiches.

Today Zingerman's employs over 700 people and operates a nationally recognized mail-order catalog. It remains independently owned.

Common questions

Zingerman's Deli — frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about Zingerman's Deli menu, sandwiches, bread, cheese and visiting Ann Arbor.

What is Zingerman's Deli famous for?

Zingerman's Deli in Ann Arbor, Michigan is famous for its massive, overstuffed sandwiches — particularly the Reuben (#2) and the Georgia Reuben (#59) — as well as its exceptional artisan bread baked at the adjacent Zingerman's Bakehouse, an extensive cheese counter with 60+ varieties, and a deep selection of imported specialty foods. Founded in 1982, it has been called one of America's greatest delis by publications including the New York Times, Food & Wine, and Bon Appétit.

What is the most popular sandwich at Zingerman's?

The #59 Georgia Reuben — smoked turkey, coleslaw, Russian dressing and Swiss cheese on freshly baked rye — is widely reported as Zingerman's single best-seller. The classic #2 Reuben (corned beef or pastrami, Swiss, sauerkraut, Russian dressing on rye) is equally beloved and arguably more famous. Both are considered national benchmarks for the Reuben sandwich form.

Does Zingerman's ship nationwide?

Yes. Zingerman's ships a curated selection of its most popular foods via ZingermansCatalog.com, including whole-loaf breads from the Bakehouse, smoked and cured meats, specialty cheeses, olive oils, honey, and gift boxes. The mail-order operation has been running since the 1990s and ships throughout the contiguous United States. Note: freshly made sandwiches are in-store only.

What are Zingerman's hours?

Zingerman's Deli is generally open seven days a week, with hours typically running from morning (around 7 AM) through evening (around 10 PM). Hours can shift around holidays and special events. For current hours confirm directly at zingermansdeli.com or call the deli at (734) 663-3354 before visiting.

How much is a sandwich at Zingerman's Deli?

Zingerman's Deli sandwiches are known to be premium-priced relative to chain delis — a reflection of the quality of hand-baked bread, freshly sliced meats and imported ingredients. Zingerman's does not publish a fixed, stable price list online. For current pricing, visit zingermansdeli.com or call (734) 663-3354. Menupedia omits prices here to avoid inaccurate information.

Where is Zingerman's Deli located?

Zingerman's Deli is located at 422 Detroit St, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104, in the historic Kerrytown neighborhood near the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. It is part of the Zingerman's Community of Businesses, which includes the Bakehouse, Creamery, Roadhouse restaurant, Coffee Company and other enterprises — all based in Ann Arbor.

Is Zingerman's Deli worth it?

Zingerman's is consistently cited by food critics, chefs and travelers as one of the best delis in America. If you are looking for an authentic, no-shortcuts deli experience — hand-baked bread, freshly cut meat, real pickles, world-class cheese — the answer from nearly every food publication is yes. Plan for a wait, especially on weekends. The experience is considered a destination food visit, not just a quick lunch.

Does Zingerman's have vegetarian options?

Yes. Zingerman's offers a solid selection of vegetarian sandwiches, including the #28 Vegetarian (roasted vegetables and goat cheese on farm bread), fresh mozzarella and tomato (#32), and egg salad (#46). The cheese counter is entirely vegetarian, as are the breads and many of the specialty pantry items (olive oils, honeys, vinegars). Vegan options are more limited given the dairy-heavy cheese and egg program, but can be requested.

What bread does Zingerman's use for sandwiches?

Every sandwich at Zingerman's is built on bread baked fresh daily at Zingerman's Bakehouse, a separate Ann Arbor business. The flagship breads include the Farm Bread (long-fermented sourdough), Jewish Rye (with caraway, the Reuben base), Paesano (rustic Italian), Pumpernickel and Challah. Choosing the right bread for a sandwich is treated as seriously as choosing the filling — counter staff will walk you through options.
