The signature build

What does "Mike's Way" mean — and why everyone orders it

"Mike's Way" is Jersey Mike's house build — the way line staff has dressed subs since the original 1956 Point Pleasant store. Free, default, and the single biggest reason long-time JM customers say the chain tastes different from Subway or Firehouse.

Order any sub "Mike's Way" and the line will dress it with these six ingredients, in this exact order, after the meat and cheese:

  1. Lettuce — shredded iceberg.
  2. Tomato — sliced fresh daily in-store.
  3. Onions — thinly sliced white onion.
  4. Oil and red-wine vinegar — the JM proprietary blend (not Italian dressing).
  5. Oregano — dried, dusted across the sub.
  6. Salt — finished with a light salt sprinkle.

That's it. No mayo, no mustard, no special sauce — Mike's Way is the savory-and-bright counterpoint to the meat, designed for cold subs but applied just as often to hot grilled subs (the "Hot + Mike's Way" combo is one of the most-ordered builds on the chain).

"Mike's Way" is a no-charge customization at any size. You can also order partial — "Mike's Way, no onions" is the most common variant.

  • The six elements: lettuce, tomato, onion, oil & red-wine vinegar, oregano, salt
  • Free: no upcharge at Mini / Regular / Giant
  • Hot subs too: "Mike's Way" applies to cheesesteaks after grilling
  • The vinegar: JM proprietary red-wine vinegar & oil blend (not Italian dressing)
  • Most common opt-out: "Mike's Way, no onion"
  • If you skip it: the sub arrives with meat + cheese only

Hot vs. cold

Hot subs vs. cold subs at Jersey Mike's

Jersey Mike's runs two parallel lines — a cold-cut line where meats are sliced to order in front of you, and a hot grill line where steak, chicken and meatballs are grilled to order. Both lines accept "Mike's Way."

Cold subs — sliced to order

The cold line

Every cold sub starts with meats and cheeses freshly sliced on a dedicated counter slicer when you order — never pre-sliced. The signature builds (#5, #7, #8, #9, #12, #13) all live on this line. Cold subs accept Mike's Way and arrive at room/cold temperature on a fresh-baked roll.

Most-ordered: #13 Italian, #7 Turkey, #8 Club, #5 Super, #6 Roast Beef.

Hot subs — grilled to order

The grill line

Cheesesteaks, Chicken Phillies, meatballs, Chicken Parm and the Buffalo Chicken line are grilled to order on a flat-top behind the slicer station. Hot subs can be ordered Mike's Way — the dressing goes on after the grill. Hot proteins also drop into Sub-in-a-Tub bowls and wraps.

Most-ordered: Famous Philly, #43 Chipotle Cheesesteak, #56 Big Kahuna, Chicken Philly, Chicken Parm.

Bowl format

Sub-in-a-Tub — the low-carb bowl at Jersey Mike's

Sub-in-a-Tub is Jersey Mike's bowl format: any sub built into a tub over lettuce instead of on a roll. It's the chain's answer to low-carb, gluten-friendly and high-protein orders — you keep all the meats, cheeses, hot-grill items, and Mike's Way fixings, you just don't get the roll.

Sub-in-a-Tub is priced at Regular size and works with essentially every signature sub on the menu, including hot builds. Popular configurations:

  • Sub-in-a-Tub — #13 Italian build ($10.49): provolone, ham, prosciuttini, cappacuolo, salami, pepperoni over lettuce with Mike's Way fixings.
  • Sub-in-a-Tub — Famous Philly ($10.99): grilled steak, cheese, grilled onions over lettuce.
  • Sub-in-a-Tub — #56 Big Kahuna ($11.99): the loaded Famous Philly build with mushrooms, peppers, jalapeños, extra cheese.
  • Catering Sub-in-a-Tub bowl ($59.99): large bowl serves 8-10 — a popular keto-friendly catering option.

Note on gluten: the Sub-in-a-Tub preparation removes the sub roll, but Jersey Mike's does not run a dedicated gluten-free kitchen and shared surfaces (slicers, grill) can still mean cross-contact. Confirm with the store if you have celiac.

  • What it is: any sub, built over lettuce in a tub — no roll
  • Price: Regular-equivalent (~$10.49–$11.99)
  • Best for: low-carb, keto, gluten-conscious orders
  • Works with hot subs? Yes — Famous Philly & #56 are popular
  • Mike's Way works? Yes, fully — same fixings as on a roll
  • Catering bowl? Yes — $59.99 serves 8-10

JM and Firehouse are positioned as premium peers — both price Regular subs in the $10.49–$11.49 band and run cheesesteak-forward menus. Subway sits below both with pre-sliced meats. Jimmy John's competes on speed rather than build quality (its "Freaky Fast" model), with no hot grill line and the Unwich (lettuce-wrap) as its bowl equivalent. Fresh-slicing in front of the customer is unique to Jersey Mike's at this scale.

Dietary & allergen guide

Vegetarian, low-carb and lower-calorie picks (with prices)

Jersey Mike's leans meat-heavy — but the chain has more low-carb friendly options than any other major sub chain thanks to the Sub-in-a-Tub format, which lets you keep all the meats and cheeses but skip the roll. Vegetarian options are thin: the #14 Veggie is the only fully-vegetarian signature sub, but any sub can be ordered without meat at a small discount.

Jersey Mike's does not run a dedicated gluten-free kitchen — shared slicers and surfaces mean Sub-in-a-Tub is best described as "low-gluten" rather than gluten-free for celiac safety. Confirm with the store.

Cross-contact possible. Confirm with the restaurant if you have a serious allergy.

  • Vegetarian sub: #14 The Veggie ($9.49 Regular)
  • Vegetarian side: Mac and Cheese ($3.99)

Ordering tips

How to order — and save — at Jersey Mike's

Default

Always order Mike's Way

The free house dressing (lettuce, tomato, onion, oil & red-wine vinegar, oregano, salt) is the entire reason JM tastes different. It's free; opt in at any size.

Best value

Order a Giant to share

A Giant (~15") costs about 55% more than a Regular but is more than twice the bread and protein. The value-per-inch winner — easy 2-3 person meal.

Low-carb

Sub-in-a-Tub instead of a Wrap

Sub-in-a-Tub keeps every ingredient — including hot-grill items — over lettuce, with no roll. A flour wrap is similar carb count to a Regular sub roll; the tub is the real low-carb format.

App

Use the Jersey Mike's Insider app

~1 point per dollar; free Mini at 30 points, free Regular at 75, free birthday sub. BOGO Mini days drop periodically. App-exclusive offers undercut in-store pricing during promotional windows.

Hot subs

Cheesesteak + Mike's Way

Lots of customers don't realize you can order Mike's Way on hot subs. Famous Philly + Mike's Way (dressing applied after grilling) is one of the most-loved JM builds.

Catering

Sub Tray vs. Box Lunch

For 10+ people, the Small Sub Tray ($54.99) beats individual Box Lunches ($13.99/person) on cost. For office-friendly individual portions with chips + cookie included, Box Lunches are easier.

About Jersey Mike's

The Jersey sub shop that bet on slicing meat fresh — and won.

In 1956, a 17-year-old named Mike opened a sub shop at the corner of Broadway and Arnold in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, and called it Mike's Subs. Fifteen years later it was renamed Jersey Mike's. In 1975, another 17-year-old named Peter Cancro — who'd been working the slicer since he was 14 — borrowed the money from his football coach and his coach's banker friend to buy the single-store chain. Cancro is still CEO half a century later.

The bet was simple and unchanged: slice meats and cheeses fresh to order in front of the customer, bake sub rolls in-store, build every sub Mike's Way unless told otherwise. Fifty years on, ~3,000 stores and counting, and the chain still puts a slicer at the front of every shop — the single most distinctive operational choice in the U.S. sub-shop category.

Common questions

Jersey Mike's menu — frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions people most commonly ask about Jersey Mike's menu, prices, Mike's Way, sizes, and Insider rewards.

How much is a Jersey Mike's #13 sub in 2026?

The #13 The Original Italian — the chain's signature sub — is priced at approximately $10.99 for a Regular (7"), $5.99 for a Mini (5") and $16.99 for a Giant (15") at most U.S. locations as of May 2026. Pricing runs higher in California, the Northeast and Hawaii; ordering 'Mike's Way' adds no charge. The #13 is loaded with provolone, ham, prosciuttini, cappacuolo, salami and pepperoni — sliced fresh to order in front of you.

What is Mike's Way at Jersey Mike's?

Mike's Way is Jersey Mike's signature sub-build. When you order any sub 'Mike's Way,' the line staff dresses it with lettuce, tomato, onions, oil and red-wine vinegar, oregano, and salt. There's no upcharge — it's the default way the brand recommends every sub be ordered. For hot subs, 'Mike's Way + Hot' means those same toppings layered over a freshly grilled cheesesteak or chicken Philly. The vinegar-and-oil blend (the JM red-wine-vinegar mix, not Italian dressing) is what distinguishes Mike's Way from a generic dressed sub at other chains.

What's the difference between Mini, Regular and Giant at Jersey Mike's?

Jersey Mike's subs come in three sizes: Mini (~5 inches), Regular (~7 inches), and Giant (~15 inches, feeds 2-3). On the #13 Original Italian, that's roughly $5.99 / $10.99 / $16.99. The Mini is the cheapest entry point on the menu. The Giant is the value-per-inch winner — it costs about 55% more than a Regular but is more than twice the bread and protein. A Wrap is roughly the size of a Regular and similarly priced. Sub-in-a-Tub is Regular portion in a bowl with no roll.

Is Jersey Mike's more expensive than Subway?

Yes, on a like-for-like basis. A Jersey Mike's Regular (~7") #13 Italian runs about $10.99; a comparable Subway 6" Italian B.M.T. runs about $6.49. A JM Giant (15") at ~$16.99 sits a touch above a Subway Footlong B.M.T. at ~$9.99. JM's positioning is premium — the chain slices meats and cheeses fresh to order in front of you rather than working from pre-sliced product, bakes sub rolls in-store daily, and uses higher-grade proteins. For value-priced sub combos Subway wins; for quality-per-bite, JM is the consensus pick among reviewers.

What's in the #56 Big Kahuna Cheesesteak?

The #56 Big Kahuna Cheesesteak is Jersey Mike's loaded cheesesteak — the Famous Philly Cheesesteak plus grilled mushrooms, grilled green peppers, jalapeños, grilled onions and extra cheese. Regular runs about $12.99, Mini $7.49, and Giant $19.49. It's one of the chain's most-ordered hot subs and pairs traditionally with Mike's Way fixings on the cold side after grilling. Big Kahuna Chicken Philly is the same build with chicken instead of steak.

What is a Sub-in-a-Tub at Jersey Mike's?

Sub-in-a-Tub is Jersey Mike's bowl format: any sub built without the roll, served over a bed of lettuce in a tub. It's the chain's low-carb and gluten-friendly option — you keep all the meats, cheeses, hot-grill items and Mike's Way fixings, just no bread. Most builds run around $10.49–$11.99. Popular options include the #13 Italian Sub-in-a-Tub, the Famous Philly Sub-in-a-Tub and the #56 Big Kahuna Sub-in-a-Tub. There's also a catering bowl format that serves 8-10.

Does Jersey Mike's slice meat fresh to order?

Yes — and this is the chain's biggest point of differentiation. Every meat and cheese on the cold-sub line is sliced fresh in front of you when you order, on dedicated slicers behind the counter. The chain does not work from pre-sliced product or pre-built sub kits. Sub rolls are baked in-store throughout the day. This is the primary reason JM is positioned (and priced) as a premium chain compared to Subway, which uses pre-sliced meats and pre-baked bread shipped frozen.

What is Jersey Mike's Day of Giving?

The Annual Day of Giving is Jersey Mike's signature charity event, held the last Wednesday of March each year. On that single day, 100% of sales from every U.S. Jersey Mike's location — every sub, drink and side, not just profits — is donated to a chosen local charity partner (each franchise picks its own partner from a vetted list). The 2025 Day of Giving raised more than $25 million in a single day, and the 2026 event is scheduled for the last Wednesday in March. It's run as part of JM's broader Month of Giving fundraising campaign throughout March.

Is Jersey Mike's an Italian sandwich shop?

Jersey Mike's identity is East-Coast Italian-American sub-shop tradition, not strictly Italian. The chain was founded in 1956 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey as 'Mike's Subs,' renamed Jersey Mike's Subs in 1971, and bought by current CEO Peter Cancro in 1975 when he was just 17. The signature sub — the #13 Original Italian — is built on Italian cold cuts (prosciuttini, cappacuolo, salami, pepperoni), and the brand leans heavily into Jersey-Italian-deli styling. But the menu also includes American cheesesteaks, club subs, turkey, and chicken-salad options that aren't strictly Italian.

How do Jersey Mike's Insider points work?

Jersey Mike's Insider is the chain's loyalty program, available via the Jersey Mike's app and website. You earn approximately 1 point per dollar spent; rewards unlock at various tiers — typically a free sub at 75 points, a Mini at 30, plus a free birthday sub and surprise-and-delight drops throughout the year. Insider members also get app-exclusive offers (BOGO sub days, mobile-order-only discounts) and early access to Sub Club seasonal items and Day of Giving info. Sign-up is free — link via the JM app.
