The Subway pricing model

6-inch vs. Footlong vs. Footlong Pro pricing matrix (May 2026)

Subway's pricing is set by sub × size. A Footlong is usually not double the 6-inch — typically only $3–$4 more — making the Footlong the strongest per-inch value. Footlong Pro doubles the protein for $2–$4 over the standard Footlong; it's strongest on premium meats (steak, chicken bacon ranch, roast beef) and weakest on cheap proteins (Cold Cut Combo, ham). Use this table to price any size of the 14 most-ordered subs.

Roast Beef$7.49$10.99$13.99
Cold Cut Combo$5.99$8.49$10.49
Buffalo Chicken$6.99$10.49$13.49

Footlong Pro adds a full second portion of protein to any Footlong sub. The upgrade is roughly +$2 on cheap cold cuts (Cold Cut Combo, Black Forest Ham), +$3 on mid-tier (Turkey, Italian B.M.T., Spicy Italian, Tuna), and +$3 on premium proteins (Steak & Cheese, Chicken Bacon Ranch, Roast Beef). Veggie Delite has no Pro variant — there's no protein to double.

How Subway combos work — sub + chips + 21oz drink

A Subway Footlong Combo bundles the sub with a 21oz fountain drink and a bag of chips (or a cookie / apple slices in place of chips). Subway is approximately 100% franchisee-owned (~20,000 U.S. stores), and pricing is set franchisee-by-franchisee. Single-item swings of $1–$2 between two stores in the same metro are common. California, the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast and Hawaii typically run 15–25% higher than the prices shown; Midwest, South and rural markets often sit at or below. The MVP Rewards app routinely undercuts the in-store board with $6.99 Footlong deals and BOGO promotions. Confirm at your local store or in the Subway app.

Price comparison

Subway vs. Jersey Mike's vs. Jimmy John's vs. Firehouse Subs

Like-for-like comparison across the four largest U.S. sub chains — May 2026 national averages on the most-ordered items. Subway is consistently the cheapest; Jersey Mike's is the most premium; Jimmy John's competes on delivery speed; Firehouse Subs runs hot subs only.

ItemSubwayJersey Mike'sJimmy John'sFirehouse Subs
6-inch / Mini Club (turkey, ham, roast beef)$6.99$8.95 (Mini)$8.49 (8" Beach Club)$7.79 (small)

Kids' meal$5.99$5.95$5.99$5.99
Median 'standard' order (Footlong + chips + drink)$13.49$18.50$15.99$16.49

Jersey Mike's slices meat to order at the counter — the main quality differentiator. Jimmy John's leans on delivery speed ("Freaky Fast") and bread baked in-store throughout the day. Firehouse Subs runs only hot subs and donates a portion of every sale to first-responder equipment grants. Subway's edge is volume (~20,000 stores vs. Jersey Mike's ~2,900, Jimmy John's ~2,800, Firehouse ~1,300) and the cheapest base pricing — plus aggressive MVP Rewards app promotions that the others don't match.

About Subway

The largest sandwich chain in the world — built on the Footlong.

Fred DeLuca opened the first Subway in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1965, as a 17-year-old funded by a $1,000 loan from family friend Peter Buck. The store was called Pete's Super Submarines; it became Subway in 1968. The franchising model that defined the chain launched in 1974, and by the 2010s Subway had grown to ~44,000 stores worldwide — briefly the largest restaurant chain on earth by store count, ahead of McDonald's. A wave of franchisee closures since 2018 has trimmed the count to about 20,000 in the U.S. and roughly 37,000 globally.

The chain's competitive identity has always been customization at a price floor — pick your bread, protein, cheese, veggies and sauces, with most of the build included in the base price. The $5 Footlong promotion (2008–2018) was the most successful single deal in fast-food history and remains the chain's pricing reference point. After flat years in the late 2010s, Subway launched the "Eat Fresh Refresh" in 2021 (new bread, thicker-sliced meats, recipe updates), the Subway Series in 2022 (the chain's first pre-built specialty lineup since the BMT/Subway Club era), and MVP Rewards in 2023.

Headquarters: Miami, Florida (moved from Milford, CT in 2023). Acquired by Roark Capital in 2024.

Dietary & allergen guide

Vegetarian, vegan, lower-calorie picks (with prices)

Subway is unusually friendly to dietary restrictions because almost every sub is customizable at no upcharge. The Veggie Delite is the cheapest vegan sub on any national chain ($4.99 / 6-inch); the Veggie Patty Footlong covers the protein-vegetarian use case at $8.49. Skipping cheese and mayo turns most subs vegan-as-served.

Subway has no certified gluten-free menu — bread and meats share preparation surfaces, and even the gluten-free bread option (where available) is prepared in shared spaces.

Cross-contact possible. Confirm with the restaurant if you have a serious allergy.

  • Cheapest vegan: 6-inch Veggie Delite ($4.99), no cheese / no mayo
  • Vegan Footlong: Veggie Delite Footlong ($7.49)
  • Vegetarian protein: Veggie Patty Footlong ($8.49)
  • Footlong Combo (vegan): Veggie Delite Combo ($10.99) with apple slices
  • Lower-calorie picks: Veggie Delite Footlong (~460 cal), 6-inch Turkey (~290 cal), Garden Salad (~110 cal)
  • Higher-protein: Subway Club Footlong (~46g), Steak & Cheese (~52g), #18 Ultimate B.M.T. (~68g)
  • Egg allergen: Tuna and any sub with mayo (mayo contains egg)
Ordering tips

How to save the most money at Subway

App

Install the MVP Rewards app

App pricing routinely beats the in-store board — $6.99 Footlong deals, BOGO promotions, free cookies for new sign-ups. 10 tokens per $1 spent; rewards unlock at Pro / Captain / All-Star tiers. Worth installing if you visit Subway twice a month.

Free swap

Footlong > 2× 6-inch

A Footlong is usually $3–$4 more than a 6-inch (not $5+ more like a double 6-inch order). Buy one Footlong and split it — you'll save ~$2 per person vs. two 6-inch subs.

Cali Fresh trick

Order a Cali Fresh for free avocado

The four Cali Fresh Series subs (#7 MexiCali, #12 Turkey Cali Fresh, #16 Steak & Cheese Cali Fresh, plus the wrap variants) include smashed avocado at no extra charge — the cheapest route to a real avocado portion on the menu vs. paying +$1.50 to add it to another sub.

Free swap

Swap chips for apple slices or cookie

Every Footlong Combo lets you swap the chips for apple slices or a single cookie at no upcharge. Cookie is the highest-calorie swap; apple slices the lowest. All three are the same combo price.

Best deal

BOGO 50% off Footlong (app)

The recurring BOGO 50% off Footlong promotion in the MVP Rewards app is the strongest deal Subway runs — two Footlongs for ~$15 vs. ~$20 standard. Plan multi-person orders around this when it's active.

Footlong Pro logic

Pro is best on premium meats

Footlong Pro adds +$2–$4 for double protein. The upgrade is great value on Steak & Cheese (+$3 for double steak), Chicken Bacon Ranch, and Roast Beef. It's poor value on Cold Cut Combo or Ham, where you'd pay roughly the same just to order a second sub.

Locations

Where to find a Subway

Subway operates approximately 37,000 restaurants worldwide and around 20,000 in the United States as of 2026 — down from a peak of ~27,000 U.S. stores in 2015. The chain has gone through a multi-year right-sizing of underperforming franchisee stores, with closures concentrated in over-saturated suburban markets. Even after the contraction, Subway has more U.S. locations than any other restaurant chain except Starbucks.

Subway uniquely operates inside grocery stores (Walmart, Target), gas stations, college dining halls, hospitals and airports — the "non-traditional" footprint is roughly 25% of all U.S. stores and accounts for most of the unique siting that other chains don't attempt.

Use the official store locator at subway.com/findastore for exact hours and non-traditional locations.

  • ~37,000 restaurants worldwide
  • ~20,000 U.S. locations
  • ~100% franchisee-owned — no corporate stores
  • ~25% are non-traditional (Walmart, gas stations, etc.)

The original twelve (#1 The Philly, #2 The Outlaw, #3 The Monster, #4 Supreme Meats, #5 The Boss, #6 The Boss Salami, #7 The MexiCali, #8 The Great Garlic, #9 The Champ, #10 All-American Club, #11 Subway Club, #12 Turkey Cali Fresh) were joined by #15 The Titan Turkey, #16 Steak & Cheese Cali Fresh, #17 Garlic Roast Beef and #18 The Ultimate B.M.T. The pitch: these are chef-built — no customization required, no decision fatigue at the counter. Footlong Series subs run $11.49–$12.99; 6-inch versions run $7.49–$8.99.

What's the difference between a Subway 6-inch and a Footlong?

Pretty much what it sounds like. A 6-inch sub is half the length of a Footlong (12 inches), with roughly half the protein, half the cheese and half the veggies. Pricing-wise, a Footlong is not double the price — usually ~$3–$4 more than the 6-inch, making the Footlong the better per-inch value. Example: a 6-inch Turkey runs $5.99; the Footlong is $9.49. The Footlong is also the only size eligible for the Footlong Pro (double protein) upgrade. The 6-inch remains the default size for the Kids' Pak.

Is the Subway Footlong Pro worth it?

Footlong Pro doubles the protein on a standard Footlong for +$2–$4 over the base price. Example: a Footlong Turkey Pro runs around $11.99 vs. $9.49 for the standard Footlong — that's an extra ~6 oz of turkey for $2.50. The math gets better the more expensive the base protein: Steak & Cheese Footlong Pro at $13.99 vs. $10.99 base is a strong $3 upcharge for double premium meat. It's worse value for cheap proteins (Cold Cut Combo, Black Forest Ham) where you'd pay roughly the same to just order a second sub. Worth it for steak, chicken bacon ranch, roast beef and Series builds; less worth it for Cold Cut Combo or Ham.

How much does it cost to add avocado at Subway?

Adding smashed avocado runs +$1.50 on any sub at most Subway stores — same upcharge on a 6-inch or Footlong, although a Footlong typically receives a roughly doubled portion. Extra avocado (a second portion) is another +$1.50. The Cali Fresh Series subs (#7 The MexiCali, #12 Turkey Cali Fresh, #16 Steak & Cheese Cali Fresh) include avocado at no extra charge — they're the cheapest way to get a real avocado portion at Subway in 2026.

What's the cheapest item at Subway?

The single cheapest line item is a single cookie at $0.99 — chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, white chip macadamia or double chocolate. For an actual meal, the cheapest options are the 6-inch Veggie Delite ($4.99), the Kids' Pak ($5.99) with a mini sub plus drink, cookie and apple slices, and the Footlong Cookie ($3.99) if you're just snacking. A 6-inch Black Forest Ham at $5.49 and 6-inch Cold Cut Combo at $5.99 round out the cheap-meat options.

Does Subway still have $5 Footlongs?

No — the $5 Footlong promotion ended nationally in 2018 after a decade-long run (the deal launched in 2008 during the recession and was credited with growing Subway from ~30,000 to ~44,000 stores at peak). Franchisees pushed back hard on the margins. Subway's MVP Rewards app does run periodic Buy One Footlong Get One 50% Off and $6.99 Footlong deals on classic subs, but a flat $5 Footlong is gone. The cheapest standard Footlong on the menu today is the Veggie Delite at $7.49; Spicy Italian and Meatball Marinara come in at $8.99.

How does Subway MVP Rewards work?

Subway MVP Rewards launched in 2023, replacing the older Subway My Way program. You earn 10 tokens per $1 spent, with three reward tiers: Pro (free unlocks at 200 tokens), Captain (better unlocks at 1,500 tokens) and All-Star (top tier at 4,000+ tokens). Tokens can be redeemed for cookies, drinks, sides or progressive discounts on Footlongs. The app also runs frequent BOGO and percent-off deals that beat in-store pricing — a $6.99 Footlong app deal is the most consistent ongoing offer. Worth installing if you visit Subway twice a month or more.

What are Subway's newest menu items in 2026?

The biggest recent additions are the Footlong Sides line — the Footlong Pretzel ($3.49), Footlong Churro ($3.99) and Footlong Cookie ($3.99) — which launched July 2023 and have stuck around as permanent menu items (the Footlong Cookie in particular went viral on TikTok). The Subway Series received its latest expansion in 2024 with #15 The Titan Turkey, #16 Steak & Cheese Cali Fresh, #17 Garlic Roast Beef and #18 The Ultimate B.M.T. Subway also refreshed deli meats in 2022, swapped to thicker-sliced turkey and ham, and rolled out new Hero Wraps (footlong-length wraps with double the meat of a standard wrap).

Is Subway cheaper than Jersey Mike's?

Yes — Subway's classic Footlongs are typically $2–$4 cheaper than the equivalent Jersey Mike's Giant (also ~12 inches). A Subway Turkey Footlong at $9.49 vs. a Jersey Mike's #7 Turkey & Provolone Giant at ~$15.95; a Subway Steak & Cheese Footlong at $10.99 vs. a Jersey Mike's #17 Philly at ~$15.95. The trade-off: Jersey Mike's slices meat to order, uses larger portions and is consistently rated higher in customer-satisfaction surveys. Jimmy John's runs in between (~$9–$13 for a 16-inch Giant), and Firehouse Subs sits closer to Jersey Mike's pricing. Subway's value angle is volume + the MVP Rewards app deals, not raw quality.
