About The Berghoff

Chicago's oldest restaurant — a German-American landmark since 1898.

Herman Joseph Berghoff, a German immigrant, first served his family beer at a stand during the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Five years later, in 1898, he opened The Berghoff restaurant at 17 W. Adams Street in the Loop. It has been there, with few interruptions, for over 125 years.

When Prohibition ended in 1933, The Berghoff obtained Chicago liquor license number one — a distinction the restaurant still holds with pride. The menu anchored on German-American cooking: wiener schnitzel, sauerbraten, bratwurst and beef rouladen, backed by house-brewed beers and root beer.

In January 2006, the restaurant announced closure after 107 years; it was quietly reopened later that year by fourth-generation family member Carlyn Berghoff, preserving the menu, the character and the beers. It operates today as one of the most historically significant dining rooms in the Midwest.
