The history

Chicago's most legendary bar since 1934

William "Billy Goat" Sianis opened the bar in 1934 — originally called the Lincoln Tavern — after purchasing it for $200, using a check that almost bounced. A goat fell off a truck nearby, Sianis adopted it, and the place became the Billy Goat Inn. The goat became a mascot, and the bar became a Chicago institution.

For decades it was the after-hours haunt of Chicago newspaper workers from the nearby Tribune, Sun-Times and other papers. Studs Terkel, Mike Royko and other Chicago legends were regulars. The bar sits underground on "Lower Michigan" — the service road beneath the Mag Mile — giving it a permanent dark, basement atmosphere that no amount of tourism has been able to sanitize.

In 1978, the Saturday Night Live sketch changed everything. But the regulars and the counter workers barely noticed. The Goat just kept serving cheeseburgers.

The SNL sketch that made "Cheezborger" a national catchphrase

On January 28, 1978, Saturday Night Live aired a sketch titled "Olympia Restaurant" — a parody of the Billy Goat Tavern counter. Written by Don Novello, performed by John Belushi, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and others.

The sketch portrayed Greek immigrant counter workers at a short-order diner who could only say a handful of things: "Cheezborger! Cheezborger! Cheezborger!" — and who deflected every order deviation with "No fries — cheeps!" and "No Pepsi — Coke!"

Both lines are rooted in real Billy Goat policy. The original Goat served chips, not fries. And it serves Coke only. To this day, if you ask for a Pepsi at the original location, the counter staff will tell you — cheerfully but firmly — "No Pepsi. Coke."

The sketch made Belushi a star and turned the Goat from a beloved Chicago local institution into a piece of American pop culture. The original location now sells "Cheezborger" merchandise and has a wall of photos and memorabilia from the SNL era.

  • Aired: January 28, 1978
  • Written by: Don Novello
  • Performed by: Belushi, Murray, Aykroyd, others
  • "No fries — cheeps!" — chips are the real Goat side
  • "No Pepsi — Coke!" — still the actual policy today
  • The Goat still sells "Cheezborger" merch

Ordering tips

How to order at Billy Goat Tavern like a local

Step 1

Order the double

Do not overthink it. Walk up to the counter and say "double cheeseburger." That is the move. You can add a single if you are hungry. Nothing else on the menu is why you came.

Step 2

Say "Coke" not "Pepsi"

The Goat serves Coke only. Asking for Pepsi is a time-honored way to get a friendly but firm "No Pepsi — Coke!" Embrace it. It is part of the experience.

Step 3

Get the cheeps (chips)

The traditional side is a bag of chips, not fries. Some locations now serve fries, but purists get chips. The SNL sketch was right: "No fries — cheeps!"

Tip

Order a beer while you wait

The Goat is a bar first. Grab a draft Old Style or whatever is on tap while your burger is being made. The original location has a full bar.

Atmosphere

Expect counter service

There is no table service. You order at the counter, get a number, and grab a seat. The original location fills up fast during lunch — go early or expect to wait standing.

Best time

Weekday lunch or late night

The original location is extremely busy at weekend lunch and during tourist season. Weekday mornings for breakfast or late evenings for a beer are quieter and more authentic.

Common questions

Billy Goat Tavern — frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions people most commonly ask about Billy Goat Tavern, its menu, history, locations and the famous SNL sketch.

What is Billy Goat Tavern famous for?

Billy Goat Tavern is famous for two things: its double cheeseburgers and the Saturday Night Live sketch that immortalized them. In 1978, John Belushi performed a parody of the counter workers shouting 'Cheezborger! Cheezborger! No Pepsi — Coke! No fries — cheeps!' The sketch aired on SNL and turned a beloved Chicago dive bar into a national legend. The original location has been open since 1934 on Lower Michigan Avenue — literally beneath the upper Mag Mile.

Where is the original Billy Goat Tavern located?

The original and most famous location is at 430 N. Michigan Ave. Lower Level, Chicago, IL 60611 — tucked beneath the upper level of Michigan Avenue (the Magnificent Mile) via a staircase or ramp near the Chicago Tribune building. This subterranean address contributes to the bar's legendary, hole-in-the-wall atmosphere. There are several additional Chicago-area locations, including Wacker Drive, Navy Pier, O'Hare Airport and others.

What is the Billy Goat Curse?

The Billy Goat Curse (also called the Curse of the Billy Goat or the Cubs Curse) refers to a supposed hex placed on the Chicago Cubs in 1945 by tavern owner William 'Billy Goat' Sianis. Sianis was reportedly ejected from Wrigley Field during the 1945 World Series because his pet goat smelled bad. He allegedly declared, 'Them Cubs, they ain't gonna win no more.' The Cubs went 71 years without a World Series title before finally winning in 2016, breaking the alleged curse.

How much does a cheeseburger cost at Billy Goat Tavern?

Billy Goat Tavern does not publish current prices online, and pricing can vary by location. The double cheeseburger is the signature item and has historically been one of the most affordable burgers in Chicago — in keeping with the bar's no-frills, working-class identity. Visit in person or call the specific location for current pricing. The original Lower Michigan Avenue location tends to be the busiest and most consistent.

What does 'Cheezborger Cheezborger' mean?

'Cheezborger! Cheezborger!' is a phonetic approximation of how the Greek immigrant counter workers at Billy Goat Tavern were perceived to say 'Cheeseburger!' The SNL sketch — written by Don Novello and performed by John Belushi, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and others — parodied the rapid-fire, heavily accented counter service at the Goat. The bit also included 'No fries — cheeps!' and 'No Pepsi — Coke!' Both are accurate to the real Billy Goat experience: chips are the traditional side, and Coke is the only cola served.

Is Billy Goat Tavern cash only?

The original Lower Michigan Avenue location has traditionally been cash-friendly and in keeping with a classic Chicago bar atmosphere, though most locations now accept credit and debit cards. It is always worth having cash on hand if you visit the original location. Call ahead or check with the specific location for current payment policies.

What are the Billy Goat Tavern hours?

The original Lower Michigan Avenue location is generally open Monday through Friday from around 6 AM to 2 AM, Saturday from approximately 10 AM to 3 AM, and Sunday from 11 AM to 2 AM — though hours shift seasonally and for special events. Other locations (Navy Pier, O'Hare, etc.) keep varying hours tied to their venues. Always confirm current hours on billygoattavern.com or by calling the location directly.

Are there multiple Billy Goat Tavern locations?

Yes. In addition to the famous original at 430 N. Michigan Ave. Lower Level, Billy Goat Tavern operates additional Chicago locations including 309 W. Washington St. (Loop), Navy Pier, O'Hare International Airport (Terminals 1 and 3), Soldier Field, and others. The original Lower Michigan location is the must-visit for the full atmosphere and history.

What should I order at Billy Goat Tavern?

Order the Double Cheeseburger — full stop. It is the reason the place exists in popular culture. Pair it with chips (not fries — the counter workers will tell you so) and a Coke or an Old Style draft beer. If you visit for breakfast, the egg-and-cheese roll is a solid choice. Keep your order simple: the Billy Goat is not a menu-exploration spot, it is a destination for one specific burger and a cold beer in an irreplaceable Chicago setting.
