Ordering guide

What regulars always order — and why

Must-order starter

Garbage Salad

Sounds like a joke; tastes like a revelation. The full-size salad is a chopped mix of salami, provolone, olives, pepperoncini, tomatoes and lettuces in house Italian dressing. Large enough for two. Order one per table before anything else.

Chicago original appetizer

Shrimp De Jonghe

Invented in Chicago around 1900 at the De Jonghe Hotel. Whole shrimp baked in sherry, garlic and seasoned butter-breadcrumb topping. Gene and Georgetti is one of the only restaurants still serving this dish. You cannot order it anywhere else quite like this.

Signature steak

Filet Mignon

Center-cut, aged, hand-cut in-house. The restaurant ages its beef in-house and hand-cuts to order — the filet is the perennial table favorite. The Porterhouse is the showpiece if you want to impress; the T-Bone is the classic.

Italian-American staple

Chicken Vesuvio

Half roasted chicken with potatoes, peas and white wine-garlic sauce. Gene and Georgetti's version is one of the most cited in Chicago for this classic dish. If you are not ordering a steak, this is what you order instead.

Best side

Hash Browns

Crispy pan-fried hash browns are the side that every regular orders without thinking twice. They have been on the menu for decades. They are not the point of a steakhouse visit, but everyone at the table will end up eating them.

Dessert

Spumoni

Traditional Italian-American layered ice cream with chocolate, pistachio and cherry. It is the classic Italian-American way to end a meal at a classic Italian-American restaurant. Simple and correct.

About Gene and Georgetti

Chicago's oldest steakhouse, open since 1941.

Gene Michelotti opened the restaurant with a partner at 500 N Franklin Street in 1941 — the same address it still occupies today, under the Wacker Drive bridge in what is now River North. The restaurant has been in continuous operation for over eight decades, surviving Chicago's changing neighborhoods, multiple owners, and generations of dining trends by staying exactly what it always was: a no-frills Italian-American chophouse where the steak is the point.

The dining room has seen Chicago mayors, governors, senators, sports legends, mob figures, and Hollywood actors pass through its booths. The Garbage Salad has been on the menu almost as long as the restaurant has been open. The Shrimp De Jonghe is one of the only surviving preparations of a dish invented in Chicago at the turn of the 20th century. Gene and Georgetti is not trying to be something new. That is the entire point.

The restaurant is a family business, run by the Michelotti family. Reservations are strongly recommended. The bar seats walk-ins when available.
