About Los Mochis

The restaurant that made Japanese-Mexican fusion a genre of its own

Los Mochis was founded by Markus Thesleff, an entrepreneur and restaurateur who wanted to explore the natural affinity between Japanese precision and Mexican boldness. The name comes from Los Mochis, a port city on the Pacific coast of Sinaloa, Mexico — a nod to the meeting point of Pacific Ocean cuisines.

The Notting Hill location opened in 2021 and quickly became one of London's most talked-about new restaurants, praised for the ingenuity of its cooking and the quality of its raw bar. Chicago followed in 2022, bringing the concept to an American city with its own deep relationship with both Japanese and Mexican food cultures.

The cooking at Los Mochis works because the two cuisines share underlying principles: respect for raw fish, bright acid, precision cutting, citrus as a finishing flavour, and the importance of contrast — hot and cold, raw and cooked, bold and delicate. The sushi taco is the concept's most visible expression: nori where the tortilla would be, tuna tataki where the carne asada would be, yuzu where the lime would be.

Common questions

Los Mochis — frequently asked questions

The concept, locations, what Japanese-Mexican fusion means in practice, must-order dishes, vegetarian options and reservations — answered.

What is the concept at Los Mochis?

Los Mochis is a Japanese-Mexican fusion restaurant founded by Markus Thesleff. The concept is named after Los Mochis, a coastal city in Sinaloa, Mexico. The restaurant blends Japanese culinary technique — tiradito, tataki, miso glazing, sushi construction — with Mexican ingredients and flavour profiles: aguachile, leche de tigre, chipotle, jalapeño, corn and mezcal. The result is a cuisine that's entirely its own: not Japanese, not Mexican, but something new at the intersection of both.

Where are Los Mochis locations?

Los Mochis has two locations: Notting Hill, London (2 Farmer Street, W8 7SN, opened 2021) and Chicago (1 W Superior Street, opened 2022). The London site in Notting Hill was the original; Chicago followed a year later. Confirm current hours and reservation availability at losmochisrestaurant.co.uk.

What is Japanese-Mexican fusion?

Japanese-Mexican fusion at Los Mochis means applying Japanese culinary techniques — tataki (searing), ceviche-tiradito (slicing and curing), miso glazing, ponzu dressing, tempura battering — to ingredients and flavour profiles drawn from Mexican cooking: leche de tigre, aguachile, jalapeño, chipotle, corn tortillas, mezcal. The most celebrated example is the sushi taco: a crispy nori-sesame shell (the fusion of Japanese nori and Mexican taco form) filled with Japanese-cured fish and Mexican salsas.

What are the must-order dishes at Los Mochis?

The dishes regulars return for at Los Mochis: Miso Glazed Black Cod (£38 — the signature main), Tuna Tiradito (£18), Spicy Tuna Sushi Taco (£16 for 2), Yellowtail Leche de Tigre (£19), Wagyu Gyoza (£16) and the Yuzu Margarita (£16). For the full experience, order 3-4 cold plates to share, one portion of sushi tacos per person, and one main each.

Is Los Mochis vegetarian-friendly?

Los Mochis has a reasonable selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes. The Cauliflower Katsu (£24, vegan) and Crispy Corn Ribs (£12, vegan) are popular plant-based mains and starters respectively. The Truffle Quesadilla (£14) is vegetarian. The raw bar section is fish-focused, but the kitchen can accommodate dietary requirements. Confirm with the team when booking.

Do I need a reservation at Los Mochis?

Los Mochis is a popular destination for date nights and group celebrations, and tables are in demand. Book in advance via the official website at losmochisrestaurant.co.uk or via the restaurant's booking system. Walk-ins may be possible at the bar during quieter weekday periods.
