About Margie's Candies

A Chicago ice cream institution since 1921 -- four generations, one hot fudge recipe.

Peter George Poulos opened Margie's Candies in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood in 1921, naming it after his wife. More than a century later, the same family still runs it across four generations, and the hot fudge recipe has never changed. The Beatles ate here in 1965 after their Comiskey Park show; the parlor's walls still carry the photographs. Al Capone was a regular customer. The Chicago Cubs have celebrated championship runs here.

Margie's has resisted modernization by design. The vintage fixtures, the penny-candy cases, the Boston-style ice cream sodas and the phosphates are kept intact because they are the point. The parlor operates two locations -- the original Bucktown spot at 1960 N. Western and a Ravenswood location at 1813 W Montrose -- and the menu runs from a $2.00 cup of coffee to a $95.95 showpiece sundae.

The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Magazine and virtually every Chicago dining guide have placed Margie's on their lists of essential Chicago experiences. It is a functioning museum of American ice cream culture that also happens to serve the city's best hot fudge.
