About Baskin-Robbins

From a Glendale ice cream shop to the world's largest specialty chain.

Baskin-Robbins traces its roots to two separate California ice cream shops opened by brothers-in-law Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins after World War II. Robbins opened his first shop in Glendale in 1945; Baskin opened his first in Pasadena the same year. The pair merged their six shops in 1948 under the Baskin-Robbins name and launched the '31 flavors' campaign in 1953 — one flavor for every day of the month — to distinguish themselves from competitors offering 3–5 flavors.

The chain grew aggressively through the 1950s–70s via franchising, reaching 1,000 stores by 1970 and becoming the world's largest ice cream specialty retailer. Allied Domecq acquired the brand in 1973; Dunkin' Brands (later Inspire Brands) took ownership in 2006. Today BR operates approximately 2,400 U.S. locations and stores in 50+ countries. Many U.S. units are co-located with Dunkin' under the combined Inspire Brands franchise model.

Common questions

Baskin-Robbins menu — frequently asked questions

Quick answers about BR scoop prices, flavors, cakes and calorie counts.

How much does a scoop of Baskin-Robbins ice cream cost in 2026?

A single scoop at Baskin-Robbins is about $3.99 nationally as of May 2026. A double scoop (the most popular order) runs ~$5.49 and a triple scoop is ~$6.99. Pricing varies by market — urban stores and those co-located with Dunkin' may run slightly higher. Waffle cone upgrades add ~$0.99. For take-home, a quart is $9.99 and a half gallon is $16.99.

What are Baskin-Robbins' most popular flavors?

Baskin-Robbins' perennial top flavors by sales are: Pralines 'n Cream (vanilla with praline sauce and pecan pieces), Mint Chocolate Chip, World Class Chocolate, Very Berry Strawberry, Jamoca Almond Fudge (coffee + almonds + fudge ribbon), and classic Vanilla. The '31 flavors' concept means 31 flavors are on rotation at any given time, with the above six as permanent anchors. Seasonal and limited-time flavors cycle through the remaining slots roughly monthly.

How much is a Baskin-Robbins ice cream cake?

A 6-inch ice cream cake (serves 6–8) is about $24.99. An 8-inch cake (serves 10–12) runs ~$34.99. Custom decorated cakes (with personalized frosting messages, logos or photos) start at ~$34.99 and go up based on size and complexity — order 24–48 hours in advance. BR also sells Polar Pizzas (cookie-crust ice cream 'pizza') starting at ~$14.99. Ice cream cakes are the chain's biggest seasonal revenue driver, peaking around birthdays and the summer months.

What is the '31 flavors' concept at Baskin-Robbins?

Baskin-Robbins' '31 flavors' slogan dates to 1953 — the number was chosen so guests could try a different flavor every day of the month. Founders Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins merged their separate California ice cream shops and launched the concept to differentiate from competitors offering only a handful of flavors. Today BR actually keeps well over 100 flavors in its global rotation, with roughly 31 available at any given store on any given day. The number varies by store size. A handful of 'core' flavors (Pralines 'n Cream, Mint Chocolate Chip, World Class Chocolate, etc.) are always present; the rest rotate seasonally or by market.

Does Baskin-Robbins still have $1 scoops?

Baskin-Robbins ran a famous $1 scoop night promotion (originally '31-cent scoop night' on April 31 each year) through 2022. As of 2024–2026 the chain has moved to a general app-based discount program rather than a single annual event — check the BR app or website for current deals. The everyday single-scoop price is ~$3.99 nationally. Dunkin' Rewards members sometimes receive BR ice cream coupons as part of the combined loyalty program (BR and Dunkin' share ownership under Inspire Brands).

How many calories are in a Baskin-Robbins single scoop?

Calories vary by flavor but a typical single scoop of hard ice cream (2.5 oz standard) runs approximately 150–200 calories. Pralines 'n Cream is ~280 cal/scoop, World Class Chocolate ~190 cal/scoop, Vanilla ~150 cal/scoop. A double scoop roughly doubles those figures. A milkshake (two scoops + whole milk) is approximately 400–600 calories depending on flavor. BR publishes a full nutrition calculator at baskinrobbins.com — use it for precise allergen and calorie data for any flavor build.

Is Baskin-Robbins vegetarian or vegan-friendly?

Most of BR's standard hard-scoop flavors are vegetarian (made with dairy). Fully vegan options are limited but available: BR has rolled out non-dairy frozen desserts in flavors like Non-Dairy Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Non-Dairy Strawberry Streusel at participating locations — availability varies by store. The Cappuccino Blast and standard milkshakes contain dairy. For allergen specifics (nuts, soy, eggs), check the BR online nutrition guide or ask in-store, as many flavors contain shared equipment with nut-containing products.

How many Baskin-Robbins locations are there in the U.S.?

Baskin-Robbins operates approximately 2,400 locations in the United States as of 2026, making it the country's largest ice cream specialty chain by unit count. Many U.S. locations are co-located with Dunkin' (the chains share ownership under Inspire Brands). Globally, BR has stores in more than 50 countries. Use the store locator at baskinrobbins.com for the nearest location, as hours and flavor availability vary widely. The first BR store opened in Glendale, California in 1945.
