Visitor tips

How to make the most of your Mama's Fish House meal

Book early

Reserve 2-4 months out

This is not an exaggeration. Most visitors who try to book 4-6 weeks out find nothing available. Set a calendar reminder and call (808) 579-8488 as soon as your Maui dates are confirmed.

Ask the server

Let the fish guide your order

The menu changes daily. Ask your server what came off the fishing boats that morning and which preparation the chef is most excited about. The fisherman-named catch is the whole point of dining here.

Timing

Request a sunset table

When making your reservation, request an ocean-view table and ask about sunset timing. Maui's North Shore sunsets over the water are spectacular -- the view alone is worth the splurge.

Dress code

Hawaii-elegant attire

No strict dress code, but this is fine dining. Aloha shirts, linen, and resort wear are perfect. Skip the beach attire -- this is a very special meal and dressing for the occasion adds to the experience.

Drinks

Start with Mama's Mai Tai

The house mai tai is legendary. Order one while you look over the menu. It sets the tone immediately and is among the best in Hawaii.

Dessert

Save room for Hula Pie

The Hula Pie has been on the menu since the 1970s for a reason. Macadamia nut ice cream, Oreo crust, hot fudge. It is enormous and shareable -- order one for the table.

About Mama's Fish House

Maui's most iconic restaurant, open on the beach since 1973.

Mama's Fish House opened in 1973 on Ku'au Bay, a secluded cove on Maui's wild North Shore, and has been one of the most celebrated restaurants in Hawaii ever since. What makes it singular is its sourcing philosophy: the restaurant buys fresh fish directly from local Maui fishing families every morning -- some partnerships spanning more than 45 years -- and lists each fish on the menu alongside the name of the fisherman who caught it, where it was caught, and the method used. It is farm-to-table, except it is ocean-to-table.

The restaurant is overseen by Executive Chef Perry Bateman, a fifth-generation Maui chef. In 2018 it was named a James Beard Foundation Semi-Finalist. TripAdvisor has ranked it among the Top 10 Fine Dining restaurants in the entire United States. The Polynesian-themed dining room, staff in vintage mu'umu'u, and the beachfront setting on one of Maui's most beautiful coves make the experience unlike anything else in American dining.

Reservations are accepted up to 18 months in advance, and most prime dates fill 2-4 months out. This is a bucket-list restaurant -- plan accordingly.
