The experience

Inside La Factoria's hidden rooms

The bar is the point as much as the drinks. La Factoria is a series of interconnected rooms behind an unmarked facade, each with its own theme, music and mood.

The front

Cocktail bar

The intimate front room is where the Facto Cocktails are mixed -- house-made ginger beer, syrups and bitters behind a small bar. This is where most first-timers start.

Deeper in

Dance-floor rooms

Walk through and the bar opens into larger rooms with louder music and dance floors -- the energy climbs the further back and later into the night you go.

Wine room

The wine bar

A dedicated wine-focused room with its own separate list -- a quieter counterpoint to the cocktail and dance rooms.

Hidden

The speakeasy

A concealed speakeasy reached through an unmarked door -- the kind of room you only find if you know to look, or someone points you to it.

No sign

The unmarked door

There is no sign out front. The entrance on the corner of San Sebastian and San Jose is deliberately anonymous -- part of the speakeasy character.

On screen

The "Despacito" bar

La Factoria features in the 2017 "Despacito" video, one of the most-watched of all time -- the exposure turned a local favorite into a global destination.

The documented list

La Factoria cocktails, beer, wine & tapas

Items documented in public coverage of the bar. Signature cocktails with verified prices show them; everything else is listed without a price, since La Factoria does not publish fixed pricing.

Not a fixed menu. La Factoria is famous for not printing a standard menu. The cocktail list rotates seasonally, bartenders build off-menu drinks to taste, and the wine room runs its own separate list. The items below are the ones consistently documented in press and aggregator coverage -- use them as a guide, and ask the bartender what's pouring tonight.

About La Factoria

The unmarked Old San Juan bar that became a global cocktail landmark.

La Factoria opened in 2013, founded by Leslie Cofresi, Roberto Berdecia and Pablo Rodriguez in a corner building on Calle San Sebastian that had previously housed Hijos del Borinquen. There is no sign. Inside, it unfolds as a warren of interconnected rooms -- a cocktail bar, dance rooms, a dedicated wine bar and a hidden speakeasy -- each with its own mood.

The bar built its reputation on house-made ingredients (its own ginger beer, syrups and bitters) and reinterpretations of classics like the Old-Fashioned and the Garibaldi. It was named a "Bar to Watch" on the World's 50 Best Bars list in 2014 and ranked 32nd globally in 2019, and it appeared in the record-breaking 2017 "Despacito" video. Tapas from chef Franco Buso round out the experience.

How to do La Factoria right

Order

Ask the bartender

There's no menu to memorize. Tell the bartender what spirits and flavors you like and let them build something -- it's the intended way to drink here. The Lavender Mule is the safe signature start.

Find it

Look for the unmarked corner

148 Calle San Sebastian, on the corner of San Sebastian and San Jose. There's no sign -- look for the doorway and the crowd, not a name.

Timing

Go late, and wander

It's open daily into the early hours and gets busier and louder as the night goes on. Walk through to the back rooms and the wine bar -- most people only see the front.

Entry

Walk-in, 23+ after 4pm

No reservation system for the main bar; expect a line on weekends. Entry is generally restricted to 23 and older after about 4pm -- bring ID.

Pace

Pair with tapas

The chef-curated small plates -- fish tacos, fried goat cheese balls, sliders, pizzettas -- are bar-snack scaled and pace a longer night of cocktails.

Budget

Plan for $12-$16 a drink

Most cocktails land in that band; wine-room and specialty pours can run higher. There's no fixed price list, so check as you order.

Common questions

La Factoria -- frequently asked questions

The questions people most often ask about La Factoria's menu, cocktails, rooms and how to visit.

Does La Factoria have a menu?

Not in the usual sense. La Factoria is famous for not printing a standard menu. A rotating list of "Facto Cocktails" (house signatures like the Lavender Mule, Spiced Old-Fashioned and Champeta) is available, but bartenders frequently build drinks to your taste -- tell them what spirits and flavors you like and they make something for you. The wine room has its own separate list. Because of this, item availability and prices change often; treat any list (including this one) as a guide, not a guarantee.

What is La Factoria's most famous cocktail?

The Lavender Mule is the bar's signature pour and its most-photographed drink -- made with house-made ginger beer and lavender syrup, served in a copper mug. The Spiced Old-Fashioned (aged rum and spiced bitters) is the other most-cited signature. Both appear repeatedly in press coverage and on the rotating Facto Cocktails list.

How much do cocktails cost at La Factoria?

Documented cocktail prices land roughly in the $12-$16 range -- for example, the Lavender Mule near $12.83 and the Spiced Old-Fashioned near $16. Because La Factoria does not publish a fixed menu and the list rotates, prices vary by night and by room; some specialty and wine-room pours run higher. Confirm current pricing in person.

Where is La Factoria located?

La Factoria is at 148 Calle San Sebastian, on the corner of Calle San Sebastian and Calle San Jose in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The entrance is intentionally unmarked -- there is no sign -- which is part of its speakeasy character. It sits in the heart of Old San Juan's nightlife district.

Why is La Factoria famous?

La Factoria is one of the most acclaimed bars in the Caribbean and has been a fixture on the World's 50 Best Bars list -- named a "Bar to Watch" in 2014 and ranking 32nd globally in 2019. It is celebrated for house-made ingredients, a warren of hidden interconnected rooms, and a speakeasy behind an unmarked door. It also appeared in the record-breaking 2017 "Despacito" music video, which boosted its international profile.

What are the hidden rooms at La Factoria?

La Factoria is built as a series of interconnected rooms, each with its own theme, music and mood. There is an intimate front cocktail bar, larger rooms with dance floors deeper inside, a dedicated wine bar, and a hidden speakeasy reached through a concealed door. Part of the experience is wandering through to find the room that suits your night -- few visitors see all of them in one visit.

Does La Factoria serve food?

Yes -- a menu of tapas and small plates curated by chef Franco Buso, including items such as fish tacos, fried goat cheese balls, a beef slider trio and pizzettas. The food is designed to complement the cocktails rather than serve as a full dinner; it is bar-snack scaled.

Do I need a reservation, and is there an age limit?

La Factoria is generally walk-in only -- there is no formal reservation system for the main bar, and lines can form on weekends. It is open daily into the early morning. After about 4pm, entry is typically restricted to 23 and older. Bring ID, and expect it to get busy and loud later in the night.

Was La Factoria in the Despacito video?

Yes. La Factoria features prominently in Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's 2017 hit "Despacito", which became one of the most-viewed music videos of all time. The exposure made the unmarked Old San Juan bar an international destination and is one reason it now draws visitors from around the world.
