Hutong NYC Peking duck: prices, servings and how to order

The roasted Peking duck is the single most-ordered dish at Hutong NYC and the one dish every table is recommended to share. It is served in two stages by your server tableside.

How the Peking duck is served

Stage one: The lacquered duck arrives whole on a carved wooden board. Your server slices the crispy skin and tender breast meat tableside. Each guest wraps pieces in thin steamed pancakes with hoisin sauce, julienned cucumber and scallion.

Stage two: The remainder of the carcass returns to the kitchen and comes back as a wok-tossed side dish -- often stir-fried with ginger, scallion and bean sprouts.

Pre-ordering the duck when you make your reservation is strongly recommended -- the kitchen roasts ducks to order and availability is limited. Call 212-758-4800 or note it in your OpenTable reservation.

  • Half duck: $72 -- serves 2-3 people
  • Whole duck: $144 -- serves 4-6 people

Ordering tips

How to get the most from a meal at Hutong NYC

Essential

Pre-order the Peking duck

The roasted Peking duck is made to order and supply is limited each evening. When making a reservation -- via OpenTable or by calling 212-758-4800 -- note that you want the duck. Walk-in availability is not guaranteed.

Best value

Come for weekday set lunch

The set lunch menu (from $30 per person, Mon-Fri) offers the best per-dollar experience at Hutong NYC. You get the same kitchen, same service and many of the same dishes at a fraction of the dinner price.

Sharing

Order family style

Hutong is designed for sharing. The kitchen recommends 3-5 dishes per couple at dinner. Ordering a mix of dim sum, one signature main (Peking duck or Red Lantern crab), a vegetable and a noodle dish is the most balanced approach.

Heat level

Ask about spice levels

Several Hutong dishes -- especially Sichuan-influenced ones like the Red Lantern crab, mapo tofu and dan dan noodles -- carry significant chilli heat. The kitchen will moderate spice on request; let your server know when ordering.

Shanghai Bar

Start at the bar

The Shanghai Bar (open 12pm-12am daily) offers cocktails inspired by 1920s Shanghai. Arriving early for a cocktail before your table is the intended experience in the Art Deco dining room -- it sets the tone for the meal.

Location

Easy by subway

Hutong NYC is steps from the Lexington Ave/59th Street station serving the N, Q, R, W, 4, 5 and 6 trains. It is directly across from Bloomingdale's on Lexington Avenue. Street parking on Lexington is limited -- subway or Midtown garage is recommended.

About Hutong NYC

Northern Chinese fine dining in a 1920s Art Deco dining room.

Hutong NYC opened at 731 Lexington Avenue in Midtown East as the New York outpost of the global Hutong group, which launched in 2012 at The Shard in London. The word "hutong" refers to the narrow alleyways and courtyard neighbourhoods of Beijing -- a nod to the restaurant's Northern Chinese culinary roots.

The NYC restaurant occupies an Art Deco room designed to evoke 1920s New York and Shanghai simultaneously, with dark lacquered wood, silk lanterns and the Shanghai Bar as the centrepiece. The kitchen draws from the culinary traditions of Sichuan, Dongbei, Hunan and Peking, combining classical techniques with contemporary presentation.

Hutong NYC has five sister locations worldwide: London (The Shard), Hong Kong, Miami and Dubai. All locations share the signature Peking duck and Red Lantern crab, with menus localised to each market.

What is the Red Lantern at Hutong NYC?

The Red Lantern is Hutong's most iconic dish: a whole crispy soft-shell crab buried under an overflowing mound of Sichuan dried chillies. It is priced around $57 and available on the a la carte dinner menu.

What kind of food does Hutong NYC serve?

Hutong NYC serves contemporary Northern Chinese cuisine drawing from the culinary traditions of Sichuan, Dongbei, Hunan, Peking and Shanghai. Hutong NYC has a meaningful selection of vegetarian and vegan options. Standouts include the vegetarian spring rolls ($28), mushroom and spinach dumplings ($28), truffle shiitake baos ($30), mapo tofu, kung po tofu, wok-fried kai-lan with ginger sauce, Sichuan aubergine tempura, and the mango pudding dessert. The kitchen uses shared woks, so guests with serious cross-contamination concerns should discuss with the restaurant when booking.
