About Greenwoods Edinburgh

Amsterdam origins, Scottish ingredients -- Edinburgh's Dutch-inspired brunch cafe.

Greenwoods was founded in Amsterdam in 1988, built around six principles: product freshness, high-quality tea and coffee, seasonal fresh produce, excellent service, quality and atmosphere, and knowledge. After more than three decades in the Netherlands, the brand arrived in Edinburgh in May 2021, on Frederick Street in the New Town.

The Edinburgh kitchen sources top-quality local ingredients and makes everything fresh on the premises daily. The menu blends Scottish produce (full Scottish breakfasts, smoked salmon, black pudding) with Dutch cafe heritage (appeltaart, premium coffee, a wide range of specialty teas and house-made drinks). General manager Jen Nelson, who is Scottish, has steered the Edinburgh opening from the start.

The restaurant celebrated its fifth Edinburgh anniversary in 2026. It is a small, popular venue -- booking ahead is strongly recommended.

Ordering tips

How to get the most from a visit to Greenwoods Edinburgh

Essential

Book ahead

Greenwoods is a small venue that fills fast, especially at weekends. Book via OpenTable or greenwoods.eu. Walk-ins are taken subject to availability but waits can be long.

Must-order

Try the Dutch appeltaart

The Dutch apple pie at GBP 4.95 is the brand's signature and available to take away. Even if you are having a full brunch, order a slice to go -- it is what makes Greenwoods distinct.

Value tip

Lighter items to manage cost

Mains run GBP 13-17 and a service charge is added. For a lighter spend, the appeltaart (GBP 4.95), baked tea loaf (GBP 3.50) and a specialty tea or coffee (GBP 3-4) offer the full Greenwoods experience at a lower outlay.

Dietary

Vegan and GF options available

Greenwoods handles vegan and gluten-free requests well. Mention your requirements when booking or on arrival. The Vegan Full Breakfast and Banana Bread Tumble (vegan mascarpone version) are particularly praised.

Drinks

Go beyond the coffee

The house-made soft drinks -- Passionfruit and Vanilla Cooler, Ginger Beer with Lime, Hibiscus and Cherry Fizz -- are all GBP 4-5 and consistently praised. The specialty tea selection (Lapsang, Verveine) is also a cut above a standard cafe.

Timing

Go on a weekday if possible

Weekend mornings are the busiest period. Weekday visits between 9 am and 11 am are typically quieter. Hours are shorter on weekdays (closing 2:30 pm) so arrive before 1 pm to sit down comfortably.
