About

About Attaboy

Attaboy opened in 2012 at 134 Eldridge Street in Manhattan's Lower East Side, in the exact footprint of the legendary Milk & Honey — the original modern speakeasy founded by Sasha Petraske in 2000. When Milk & Honey relocated uptown, co-founders Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy transformed the intimate Eldridge Street space into something entirely their own. The bar was reconfigured to seat around 28 guests, pressed tin ceilings were removed during renovation, and the front door acquired no signage. If you know, you know.

Both founders came up through the Milk & Honey school of bartending, where precision, hospitality, and the rigorous pursuit of a perfect cocktail were non-negotiable standards. Sam Ross created the Penicillin in 2005 — a Scotch-and-ginger sour that became one of the most widely replicated cocktails of the 21st century — and the Paper Plane in 2008, now recognized by the International Bartenders Association as a modern classic. Michael McIlroy created the Greenpoint, a Brooklyn-named riff on the Manhattan using rye, yellow Chartreuse, and sweet vermouth. These aren't merely drinks on a menu; they are drinks that changed the global cocktail industry.

Attaboy operates on a simple but demanding premise: there is no menu. Guests tell the bartender their preferred spirit, flavor profile, or style — or say nothing and trust the bartender completely — and a bespoke cocktail is created on the spot. In 2022, this approach earned Attaboy the top ranking in North America from the World's 50 Best Bars, a recognition that confirmed what regulars and industry professionals had long known. A Nashville outpost followed, also earning accolades including a James Beard Foundation nomination. The NYC location remains walk-in only, first come first served, for parties of six or fewer, and strictly 21+.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Attaboy have a menu?

No — Attaboy famously operates without a printed menu. Instead, guests tell the bartender their preferred spirit (whiskey, gin, rum, tequila, etc.), flavor style (citrusy and refreshing, rich and stirred, bitter and herbal), and any other preferences, and the bartender creates a custom cocktail on the spot. This bespoke approach is central to Attaboy's identity and was inherited from its predecessor, Milk & Honey.

How much do cocktails cost at Attaboy?

Attaboy does not publish prices. As of 2026, top-tier NYC craft cocktail bars typically charge in the range of $18–$24 per cocktail, and Attaboy is generally considered in this tier — but exact prices are not publicly listed and may vary. Expect to pay for world-class bartending in an intimate setting.

Do I need a reservation at Attaboy?

No reservations are accepted at Attaboy NYC. The bar operates on a strictly walk-in, first come first served basis. Parties are limited to six people or fewer. Arrive early in the evening for the best chance of getting a seat, especially on weekends. You must be 21 or older with a valid, physical government-issued ID.

Where is Attaboy located?

Attaboy NYC is located at 134 Eldridge Street, New York, NY 10002, in the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan. There is no exterior signage — just knock on the door. The nearest subway stations are Delancey St/Essex St (J, M, Z, F lines).

Who invented the Penicillin cocktail?

The Penicillin was created by Sam Ross — one of Attaboy's co-founders — in 2005 while he was working at the original Milk & Honey. The drink combines blended Scotch whisky, fresh lemon juice, honey-ginger syrup, and a float of peaty Islay Scotch on top. It became one of the most widely celebrated and copied cocktails of the 21st century.

What is the Paper Plane cocktail?

The Paper Plane was created by Sam Ross and Sasha Petraske in 2008 as a favor for bartender Toby Maloney, who needed a summer drink for his Chicago bar, The Violet Hour. The recipe is elegantly simple: equal parts bourbon, Amaro Nonino, Aperol, and fresh lemon juice. The International Bartenders Association officially recognized it as a modern classic in 2020.

What is the Greenpoint cocktail?

The Greenpoint is a stirred, spirit-forward cocktail created by Attaboy co-founder Michael McIlroy. It combines rye whiskey, yellow Chartreuse, and sweet vermouth — essentially a Manhattan riff with herbal complexity from the Chartreuse. It is named after the Greenpoint neighborhood in Brooklyn, and is considered one of the important modern Manhattan variations.

Has Attaboy won any awards?

Yes — Attaboy has received some of the highest recognition in the global bar industry. In 2022, it was ranked #1 bar in North America by the World's 50 Best Bars in the award's inaugural North America category. The Nashville location was nominated for a James Beard Foundation Award the same year. Attaboy NYC is consistently cited among the best cocktail bars in the world by industry publications and peers.

Is there an Attaboy outside of New York?

Yes. A second Attaboy location opened in Nashville, Tennessee, at 8 McFerrin Avenue in East Nashville (zip 37206). It operates seven days a week — Sunday through Thursday 5 pm to 2 am, Friday and Saturday 4 pm to 2 am — and follows the same no-reservation, walk-in model as the NYC original. The same proprietors also operate Lakeside Lounge and the Hearts bar concept in Nashville.
