Ordering tips

How to navigate Porto's Bakery like a regular

Beat the line

Order ahead online

Porto's offers pre-ordering and pickup via portosbakery.com. For large pastry orders, cakes, or weekend visits, online ordering avoids the in-store line entirely — strongly recommended.

Timing

Go early on weekdays

Weekend mornings (especially Sunday) produce the longest lines — 45 to 90 minutes is not unusual. Weekday mornings before 9 AM or mid-afternoon visits are significantly shorter. Fresh batches come out continuously throughout the day.

Buy in quantity

Potato balls travel well

Porto's potato balls and pastries hold up well for a few hours at room temperature. Regulars routinely buy a dozen at a time to share or for the week. Most items also freeze well.

Cake orders

Order celebration cakes several days ahead

Walk-in whole cake availability is not guaranteed, especially on weekends. Order custom and standard cakes (tres leches, chocolate mousse, etc.) at least 3–5 days ahead via the website or phone.

Location choice

Try a less-known location

The Glendale and Burbank locations are the most visited. The West Covina, Downey, Buena Park, and Northridge locations typically have shorter wait times while offering the same full menu.

First visit

Start with the Big Three

First-timers should try: a potato ball, a guava and cheese strudel, and a cheese roll. Add a cafe cubano. That four-item order covers the essentials of what makes Porto's Porto's.

About Porto's Bakery

Rosa Porto's bakery, 60+ years on — still family-owned, still the same prices.

Rosa Porto fled Cuba with her family in the 1960s, bringing her baking tradition with her to Los Angeles. She began selling cakes from her home and eventually opened a small bakery in Echo Park. The bakery grew steadily, relocating and expanding across the LA area over the following decades, but remained entirely family-owned and operated.

Today Porto's has six full-service bakery-cafe locations across the Greater Los Angeles area — Burbank, Glendale (the flagship), Downey, Buena Park, Northridge, and West Covina. The family has maintained Porto's most distinctive quality: pricing that is far lower than comparable bakeries of equal or lesser quality. That combination — exceptional baked goods at prices that have barely moved in decades — is what creates the lines Porto's is known for.

Porto's does not franchise and has taken no outside investment. The bakery is operated by Rosa's children and represents one of the most successful family-owned Cuban immigrant businesses in Southern California history.

What is Porto's Bakery famous for?

Porto's Bakery is most famous for its potato balls (papa rellenas) — crispy fried croquettes stuffed with seasoned ground beef — and its guava and cheese strudels, both of which are considered among the best of their kind in Los Angeles. The cheese roll (medianoches) and caramel flan are perennial best-sellers. Porto's is also known for extraordinary value: the quality of its baked goods at its price point is widely considered unmatched in the LA food scene.

How much do Porto's potato balls cost?

Porto's potato balls (papa rellenas) are priced at roughly $1–$2 each depending on location and the year. They are sold individually and customers routinely buy them by the half-dozen or dozen. Porto's pricing is notably stable — the bakery has kept prices low as a point of pride since Rosa Porto founded it in 1960. Confirm current prices at portosbakery.com or at the counter.

Where are Porto's Bakery locations?

Porto's Bakery has six locations in the Los Angeles area as of 2026: Burbank, Glendale, Downey, Buena Park, Northridge, and West Covina. The original location is in Glendale. All locations are full-service bakeries and cafes. Hours and menus are confirmed at portosbakery.com. Porto's does not have a drive-thru; order-ahead and pickup are available via the official website.

Why is there always a long line at Porto's Bakery?

Porto's is an LA institution with a decades-long following and a reputation for exceptional quality at prices far below comparable bakeries. The combination of fresh-baked goods, a long menu, and a loyal customer base consistently produces lines that can stretch 30–60+ minutes at peak times (weekend mornings especially). Porto's manages volume through a numbering/ticket system at most locations. Ordering ahead online for pickup is the fastest option.

Does Porto's Bakery have online ordering?

Yes. Porto's Bakery offers online pre-ordering and pickup through portosbakery.com. This is strongly recommended for cakes, large pastry orders, and avoiding the in-store queue. Not all menu items are available online; items like hot food and individual pastries from the case are typically counter-only on the day.

What are Porto's Bakery's best vegetarian options?

Porto's has a strong vegetarian selection. The best-loved vegetarian items include: guava and cheese strudel, cheese roll, quesito (cream cheese puff pastry), caramel flan, tres leches cake, pan de bono (cheese bread), and the full range of sweet pastries and celebration cakes. The cafe con leche, cortadito, and fresh-squeezed orange juice complete a satisfying all-vegetarian visit.

Is Porto's Bakery a chain or a family business?

Porto's Bakery was founded by Rosa Porto, a Cuban immigrant, in Los Angeles around 1960. It remains a family-owned business — now operated by Rosa's children — and has grown to six locations across the LA area without outside investment or franchise agreements. It is not a corporate chain in the conventional sense, which is widely credited as the reason quality and prices have remained consistent across decades.

Can I order a Porto's Bakery cake for a special occasion?

Yes. Porto's makes custom and standard celebration cakes — including the legendary tres leches cake, chocolate mousse cake, mango mousse cake, strawberry shortcake, and guava and cheese cake. Cakes should be ordered at least several days in advance via portosbakery.com or by calling your local Porto's location. Walk-in cake availability is limited and not guaranteed, especially on weekends.

What is a guava and cheese strudel at Porto's?

The guava and cheese strudel is one of Porto's most iconic items: layers of flaky puff pastry wrapped around a filling of sweet guava paste and cream cheese, baked until golden. It is sweet, rich, and slightly tangy from the cream cheese — a combination that defines Cuban bakery pastry. It is sold individually and is arguably the item most likely to be cited when people are introduced to Porto's for the first time.
