Signature blend

Major Dickason's Blend: the story of Peet's most-iconic coffee

In 1969, a regular customer at Peet's original Vine Street store in Berkeley — Key Dickason, a retired U.S. Air Force major — kept coming in to ask for unusual combinations of Peet's existing roasts. He'd been a coffee drinker his whole career, and he had specific ideas about what a perfect dark-roast cup tasted like. Over many visits, Major Dickason worked with Alfred Peet behind the counter to refine his preferred blend — a deep, full-bodied combination layering several of Peet's existing components.

Alfred Peet tasted the finished mix and decided it was good enough to keep on the menu permanently. It went on the board as "Major Dickason's Blend" in 1969 and has never come off. Fifty-plus years on, it is the single most-ordered coffee at Peet's — both as a brewed-in-cup option (~$3.45 Medium) and as a 12 oz whole-bean retail bag (~$17.95). Many longtime Peet's customers will refer to it simply as "Major D's." The blend's deep, layered profile is the cup most associated with what specialty coffee tastes like at Peet's.

The story doubles as Peet's defining brand legend: customer ideas become menu items, dark roast is the house style, and the original Berkeley store still anchors the chain. Major Dickason died in 1980; the blend is sometimes considered his legacy.

Brand history

The Berkeley shop that taught Starbucks how to roast coffee.

Peet's Coffee was founded in 1966 in Berkeley, California by Alfred Peet, a Dutch immigrant who'd grown up in his family's coffee-and-tea trade in Holland and Indonesia. The original store at 2124 Vine Street still operates today — and is widely considered the birthplace of American specialty coffee. Alfred Peet brought European-style dark-roast technique to a U.S. coffee market that was dominated by canned, light-roast supermarket coffee. Customers had not, before Peet's, been able to easily buy a deep, oily, intense dark-roast espresso bean in America.

Five years later in 1971, three Peet's customers — Howard Schultz, Jerry Baldwin and Gordon Bowker — moved to Seattle and opened a store of their own called Starbucks, modeled directly on Peet's. The three Starbucks founders had personally trained at Peet's under Alfred Peet, who taught them to roast. For Starbucks' first year of operation, the new Seattle store bought its beans directly from Peet's — Starbucks did not roast in-house yet. The Berkeley-to-Seattle bean shipment is the literal connection between the two chains.

Schultz eventually bought Starbucks in 1987 and rolled out the cafe-and-espresso-bar format that defined what most Americans now mean by "coffeehouse." But the Berkeley origin remains: without Peet's, the modern American specialty-coffee industry as a whole — Starbucks included — would not exist in its current form. Industry shorthand for the founding cohort of U.S. specialty coffee is "Peetniks."

Peet's has stayed faithful to the dark-roast house style Alfred Peet defined. Starbucks has shifted lighter over the past 20 years (Pike Place Roast is medium; Blonde Espresso is light). The two chains share a founding lineage but now occupy distinct positions on the roast spectrum.

The Freddo line

"Freddo" is Italian for cold — and at Peet's it's the name for the chain's blended frozen coffee drink line, the menu equivalent of a Starbucks Frappuccino. Coffee (or coffee-free crème), milk, ice and flavor blended smooth into a slushy, ice-textured drink, finished with whipped cream and drizzle on the heavier variants.

Dietary & allergen guide

Vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free and lower-calorie picks at Peet's

Peet's stocks four non-dairy milks at every cafe — oatmilk, almondmilk, soymilk and coconut milk — and almost every espresso drink can be ordered vegan with a milk swap and a "no whip" instruction. Refreshers don't exist on the Peet's menu; the closest vegan-as-poured items are black cold brew, black Americano and the Avocado Toast.

Gluten-free and allergen-sensitive orders are harder: Peet's bakery is not certified gluten-free and shares preparation surfaces. The Greek yogurt parfait, steel-cut oatmeal (without toppings) and breakfast egg sandwiches with substitutions are reasonable lower-allergen options.

Subscription

Locations

Where to find a Peet's Coffee

Peet's Coffee operates roughly 250 cafes in the United States, concentrated heavily on the West Coast — California, Oregon and Washington — with a meaningful presence in the Northeast (New York, Massachusetts), Mid-Atlantic (D.C., Virginia) and a growing footprint in Colorado, Texas and the Sun Belt. The chain is dwarfed in store count by Starbucks (~16,800 U.S. stores) but is much denser on a per-cafe-volume basis in its home markets.

The original Vine Street store in Berkeley — 2124 Vine Street, on the corner of Vine and Walnut — has been open continuously since 1966 and is considered the founding site of American specialty coffee. Peet's also runs a strong online direct-to-consumer business for whole-bean coffee shipped to your home, plus a wholesale grocery/retail presence — Peet's bagged coffee sells in most major U.S. supermarkets.

About Peet's Coffee

The Berkeley shop that introduced America to dark-roast specialty coffee.

Peet's Coffee opened in 1966 on the corner of Vine and Walnut Streets in Berkeley, California — a small storefront run by Alfred Peet, a Dutch immigrant who'd grown up in his family's coffee-and-tea trade in Holland and Indonesia. The U.S. coffee market at that point was dominated by canned, mass-produced light-roast supermarket brands. Alfred Peet brought European-style deep, dark roasting to America for the first time at retail scale, and the original store quickly became a destination for Berkeley's counterculture and the food-and-coffee community.

Three of Peet's regular customers — Howard Schultz, Jerry Baldwin and Gordon Bowker — moved to Seattle in 1971 and opened a store of their own, modeled directly on what they'd learned roasting at Peet's. They called it Starbucks. The two chains are siblings in lineage, but Peet's has stayed faithful to the dark-roast tradition Alfred Peet defined, while Starbucks has shifted lighter over the past 20 years. Peet's markets itself as "The Original Craft Coffee."

The chain has been a subsidiary of JDE Peet's (JAB Holding company) since 2017, headquartered in Emeryville, California — a 20-minute drive from the original Vine Street store. JAB also owns Krispy Kreme, Pret a Manger, Caribou Coffee and Stumptown.

Common questions

Peet's Coffee menu — frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions people most commonly ask about Peet's menu, sizing, Major Dickason's Blend, the Freddo line, and the brand's history with Starbucks.

How much is a Peet's Latte?

A Medium (16 oz) Caffè Latte at Peet's runs $5.95 at most U.S. cafes as of May 2026. The Small (12 oz) is roughly $5.25 and the Large (20 oz) is around $6.45. Flavored lattes (Vanilla, Hazelnut, Caramel) are the same base price; seasonal lattes like the Pumpkin Pie Spice Latte run $6.45 Medium. California (Peet's home market), NYC, Boston, Seattle and Hawaii typically run 10–20% above these prices. Non-dairy milk substitutions (oatmilk, almondmilk, soymilk, coconut milk) add roughly $0.80 per drink.

What sizes does Peet's Coffee have?

Peet's uses a three-size cup system: Small (12 oz), Medium (16 oz), and Large (20 oz) — the same volumes Starbucks uses for Tall, Grande and Venti, but with plain-English names instead of Italian-style sizes. The standard price gap is roughly $0.50–$0.70 between sizes. Espresso-shot count by size: Small hot drinks get 1 shot, Medium and Large get 2 shots in most standard builds. Cold brew, iced coffee and Freddo drinks are available at all three sizes.

Is Peet's cheaper than Starbucks?

Peet's runs slightly cheaper than Starbucks on most equivalent drinks — typically by $0.20–$0.50 per drink. A Medium (16 oz) Peet's Latte at $5.95 is at parity with a Starbucks Grande Latte ($5.45), but a Peet's brewed coffee at $3.45 Medium matches Starbucks' Tall ($3.45) at a larger volume. A Freddo Mocha Medium ($6.45) is about even with a Grande Mocha Frappuccino ($5.95–$6.45). The bigger difference is roast profile — Peet's coffee is darker and more intense; Starbucks has moved toward medium roasts in recent years.

What is Major Dickason's Blend?

Major Dickason's Blend is Peet's most-iconic coffee — a deep, full-bodied, dark-roast blend created in 1969 and named after a regular Berkeley customer, Key Dickason, a retired U.S. Air Force major who came into the original Vine Street store frequently and worked with Alfred Peet to blend his own preferred mix of existing Peet's roasts. Alfred Peet decided the blend was strong enough to put on the menu permanently. It is now sold both brewed in-cup at every Peet's cafe (Medium ~$3.45) and as whole bean (12 oz bag ~$17.95) for at-home brewing. For most longtime Peet's customers, Major Dickason's is the signature coffee — the cup that defines the brand.

Did Peet's actually inspire Starbucks?

Yes — directly. Howard Schultz, Jerry Baldwin and Gordon Bowker — the three original Starbucks founders — all worked at Peet's Coffee in the 1960s and 70s, where Alfred Peet personally trained them in dark-roast coffee roasting. When they opened the original Starbucks in Seattle in 1971, the new store bought its beans directly from Peet's for its first year. Starbucks did not roast its own coffee until later. The Berkeley-to-Seattle lineage is a foundational fact of American specialty-coffee history: Peet's is widely considered the spiritual predecessor of Starbucks, and Alfred Peet is the figure who introduced European-style dark-roast specialty coffee to America.

What's a Freddo at Peet's?

The Freddo line is Peet's equivalent of the Starbucks Frappuccino — coffee (or coffee-free crème), milk and ice blended smooth into a slushy, frozen drink. The standard lineup includes the Freddo Mocha ($6.45 Medium), Freddo Latte ($6.25 Medium), Caramel Freddo ($6.45), Vanilla Bean Freddo ($6.25, coffee-free) and the simpler Java Freddo ($5.95). Seasonal Freddo variants (Black Tie Freddo, Pumpkin Freddo) cycle in during their lineup windows. "Freddo" is Italian for "cold" — fitting the espresso-tradition naming convention Peet's uses throughout the menu (Cortado, Macchiato, etc.).

Where is Peet's Coffee from?

Peet's Coffee was founded in 1966 in Berkeley, California, by Dutch immigrant Alfred Peet. The original store still operates at 2124 Vine Street in Berkeley, on the corner of Vine and Walnut, and is widely considered the birthplace of American specialty coffee. Alfred Peet brought European-style dark-roast technique to the U.S. from his family's coffee-and-tea trade in Holland and Indonesia. The chain expanded gradually for decades and now operates roughly 250 cafes nationwide — concentrated in California, Oregon, Washington and the Northeast, with growing presence in the Mid-Atlantic and Sun Belt. Peetnik Rewards is Peet's free loyalty program, run through the Peet's app. Members earn 2 points per $1 spent on app and in-store purchases, and rewards unlock at the following thresholds: 25 points (free drink customization — extra shot, syrup, non-dairy milk swap), 100 points (free drip coffee or hot tea), 200 points (free handcrafted drink, any size including a Medium latte or Freddo), 300 points (free food item — bakery or breakfast sandwich) and 500 points (a free 12 oz bag of whole-bean coffee). New members get a free drink on signup and a free drink on their birthday. Points expire 6 months after the last earning activity.

Is Peet's coffee really darker than Starbucks?

Yes — and this is the most-cited Peet's differentiator. Peet's roasts darker and pushes more intensity than Starbucks does, particularly on the espresso. The defining Peet's roasts (French Roast, Major Dickason's, Anniversary Blend) are roasted to a deep, oily, bittersweet profile that's harder to find at scale anywhere else. Starbucks in its early years roasted similarly dark — that was the Berkeley-trained Schultz/Baldwin/Bowker influence — but the chain has shifted toward medium-roast styles over the past 20 years (Pike Place Roast is medium; Blonde Espresso is lighter still). Peet's has stayed committed to the dark-roast house style, marketing itself as "the original craft coffee."

Does Peet's have food?

Yes. Peet's carries a bakery and a small breakfast/lunch food program at most cafes, though the lineup is smaller than Starbucks. Standard items include croissants ($3.95–$4.45), muffins ($3.75), bagels ($3.49–$3.75), steel-cut oatmeal ($4.95), Greek yogurt parfaits ($5.45) and breakfast sandwiches (Bacon-Egg-Cheese $6.45, Egg-Spinach-Feta $6.25). Avocado toast ($6.45) is on the menu at most cafes. Some Peet's locations carry afternoon sandwiches and salads, particularly the higher-traffic urban stores in California. Selection varies by store and time of day — confirm via the Peet's app.
