La Flauta Rambla de Catalunya opened its doors in 1984 on one of Barcelona's most beloved pedestrian boulevards, the tree-lined Rambla de Catalunya in the Eixample district. From the beginning, it positioned itself as a neighbourhood tapas bar rather than a tourist destination — a place where office workers, families, and friends could gather over small plates without ceremony or excessive cost. The signature creation that lent the restaurant its name is the flauta: a thin, crispy baguette sliced lengthwise and filled with any number of combinations, from classic Iberian ham and cheese to more elaborate pairings of cod with honey alioli or filet with foie gras.
Today La Flauta Rambla is part of Grupo La Flauta, a Barcelona-born restaurant group that now operates twelve venues across Barcelona and Madrid under brands including Vinitus, Anxoita, Cervecería Catalana, and Ciutat Comtal. Despite the growth of the parent group — which serves over 3.5 million customers and produces more than 15 million tapas annually — the Rambla de Catalunya location preserves the informal, convivial energy that made it a local institution. The kitchen still draws from the market each morning, and the three-page menu rotates daily specials alongside timeless staples like patatas bravas, Iberian ham croquettes, and grilled razor clams.
The dessert menu, where every item costs exactly €3.85, has become something of a local legend in itself. Churros with dipping chocolate, crema catalana, carrot cake, and the burnt torrija Santa Teresa are all priced identically — a small but telling sign that La Flauta still considers the full dining experience, not just the headline dishes, when crafting its offering. Walk-ins are welcome at all hours; the restaurant operates daily from early morning until midnight, making it one of the more flexible dining options in the neighbourhood.
