About

About DOPO Calgary

DOPO — Italian for "after" — is both a name and a declaration of purpose. When the beloved Beltline Italian restaurant D.O.P. (Denominazione di Origine Protetta) closed its doors, its owner Tony Migliarese refused to let the spirit of the place disappear. In November 2024, he unveiled DOPO in Marda Loop, housed in the lower level of the Elizabeth Complex at 1907 34 Ave SW. The subterranean space, with its warm brick and intimate seating for around 30 guests, conjured for Migliarese the feeling of a Tuscan basement — exactly the atmosphere he sought.

At the helm of the kitchen is Chef David Leeder, who brings a remarkable pedigree to what is, at its heart, a deeply humble style of cooking. Leeder has cooked in some of the world's most acclaimed kitchens, including Thomas Keller's three-Michelin-starred Per Se in New York and René Redzepi's groundbreaking Noma in Copenhagen. At DOPO, that fine-dining discipline is applied to recipes rooted in family tradition — many dishes are inspired by Tony's mother Rose, including the house green tomatoes and the blend of grandmothers' meatball recipes that fill the beef-and-veal meatball starter.

The menu changes with the seasons and is built around hand-rolled and stuffed pastas, from the celebrated signature giant egg yolk ricotta raviolo to rotating agnolotti, pappardelle, and gnocchi preparations. Antipasti are generous and convivial, and mains range from veal chop milanese to family-sized veal parm. DOPO is intentionally small — maximum table size is six guests — and reservations open just 30 days in advance at midnight Mountain Time. Above DOPO sits Bar Rocca, a casual wine bar offering small plates and Italian wines as a prelude or postscript to dinner.

What is DOPO Calgary's signature dish?

The giant egg yolk ricotta raviolo is widely considered DOPO's signature dish. It is a single large hand-rolled pasta filled with creamy ricotta and a whole runny egg yolk, and is mentioned in nearly every review of the restaurant.

How do I make a reservation at DOPO Calgary?

What is the connection between DOPO and D.O.P. Calgary?

DOPO is the direct successor to D.O.P. (Denominazione di Origine Protetta), a beloved Italian restaurant that operated in Calgary's Beltline neighbourhood. When D.O.P. closed, owner Tony Migliarese opened DOPO in Marda Loop to carry forward the spirit of the original while stepping into a new chapter — the name DOPO, meaning 'after' in Italian, reflects this transition.

Who is the chef at DOPO Calgary?

DOPO's executive chef is David Leeder, whose impressive pedigree includes time at Thomas Keller's three-Michelin-starred Per Se in New York City and René Redzepi's Noma in Copenhagen. At DOPO, he applies fine-dining technique to rustic southern Italian family recipes.

Is DOPO Calgary good for groups?

DOPO can accommodate groups, but the maximum table size is 6 guests due to the restaurant's intimate scale. A family-sized veal parm is one of the menu items designed for sharing. For larger events or private dining enquiries, contact the restaurant directly.

Bar Rocca is a casual Italian wine bar located directly above DOPO in the same Elizabeth Complex building. It broadens the overall dining experience without requiring a full dinner reservation.
