About

About Dishoom

Dishoom was founded in 2010 by cousins Shamil and Kavi Thakrar, drawing inspiration from the Irani cafés that flourished in Bombay from the early 1900s until their gradual disappearance in recent decades. These cafés — often run by Zoroastrian Iranian immigrants — were beloved democratic spaces where every Bombayite, regardless of class or religion, could eat well for a modest price. Dishoom set out to honour and reinvent that tradition for a British audience, opening its first location in Covent Garden with a menu that paid homage to the food, the aesthetic and the spirit of those legendary establishments.

Over the years Dishoom has grown to eleven locations across the UK, including multiple sites in London — Covent Garden, King's Cross, Shoreditch, Carnaby, Kensington, Battersea and Canary Wharf — as well as restaurants in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham. Despite its expansion, the brand has maintained a cult following built on food genuinely rooted in Bombay's culinary traditions: the 24-hour-cooked house black daal that draws queues before doors open, the bacon naan roll that has become one of London's most iconic breakfast dishes, and the whole lamb rack pre-ordered days in advance for larger parties. Dishoom's Permit Room concept, a relaxed bar spin-off, has also taken root in cities including Brighton, Cambridge, Liverpool, Oxford and Portobello.

Beyond the restaurants, Dishoom publishes its own cookbook — a bestselling volume that shares recipes and the cultural history behind them — and operates a shop selling meal kits, house chai blends, cookware and provisions. The brand has also raised millions of pounds for Magic Breakfast, a charity tackling child hunger in the UK, with each Dishoom meal funding a free school breakfast for a child in need.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Dishoom famous for?

Dishoom is best known for its house black daal — a rich, intensely flavoured lentil dish cooked for 24 hours — and its bacon naan roll, which has become one of the most iconic breakfast dishes in London. The restaurant group draws inspiration from the Irani cafés of old Bombay, creating an atmosphere and menu rooted in that tradition.

Does Dishoom take reservations?

Yes. Dishoom accepts reservations for most meal times and locations via its website. Walk-in queues are common, especially at breakfast and dinner, so booking ahead is strongly recommended. Some early morning breakfast spots are walk-in only depending on location.

What is the cheapest thing on the Dishoom menu?

The cheapest items are the wellness shots and snacks: spirulina blue shot, warm aubergine chutney and tart fruit shots from around £3.90. A single espresso is £4.00, and a pot of breakfast Assam or mint tea is £4.30.

Is Dishoom good for vegetarians and vegans?

Yes. Dishoom has strong vegetarian and vegan options throughout the menu. Highlights include the vegan Bombay fry-up, awadhi jackfruit biryani, house black daal, mattar paneer, okra fries, bhel, vegetable samosas and the vegan sausage & egg naan roll. Items are clearly marked (V) or (Ve) on the menu.

How much does a full meal at Dishoom cost?

A typical two-course dinner — a shared small plate, a main and a bread — costs roughly £30–£40 per person before drinks. A hearty breakfast such as the bacon naan roll with a house chai comes in around £17. The lamb rack centrepiece, at £45 and serving 4–8 people, is one of the best-value large-format options.

What is the house black daal and why is it so popular?

The house black daal is an urad lentil dish cooked over 24 hours on a slow flame, becoming dark, rich and deeply complex in flavour. It has been on the menu since Dishoom opened in 2010 and has developed an almost cult following — many diners order it on every visit and consider it unmissable. At £11.70 it is also one of the better-value dishes on the menu.

Does Dishoom serve alcohol?

Yes. Dishoom has a full cocktail menu including originals like the Dishoom Margarita, Baba's Sesame Espresso Martini and the Summerhouse Negroni, plus a wide range of wines, Indian-inspired beers including Kingfisher and Dishoom IPA, and a strong selection of non-alcoholic cocktails and sharbats.

How does Dishoom compare in price to other Indian restaurants in London?

Dishoom sits in the mid-range tier for London dining — more expensive than neighbourhood curry houses but considerably less than fine-dining Indian restaurants such as Gymkhana or Benares. Main courses run from around £11.70 (house black daal) to £20.50 (mutton pepper fry), putting a full dinner broadly in line with other quality casual-dining Indian restaurants in the city.

Does Dishoom have a delivery menu?

Yes. Dishoom offers a delivery menu through its website and third-party delivery platforms. The delivery menu is a curated selection of the main café menu, including the house black daal, naan rolls, grills and biryani. Prices on the delivery menu may vary slightly from in-restaurant prices.
