What makes it different

The BNSD smash burger technique

BNSD's burger is a study in controlled extremes. The beef is smashed extremely thin on a flat griddle under high heat, creating maximum surface area for the Maillard reaction. The result is a patty where the edges caramelize into crispy, paper-thin "meat skirts" -- a texture no thick patty can achieve.

The bun is deliberately soft and slightly sweet, chosen to contrast the crunchy patty edges. Condiments are applied in-house before serving. There is no customization, and none is needed.

The restaurant's counter sign says it all: "Always Order Two." A single patty is very thin; two (the Regular) is the minimum recommended build.

  • Ultra-thin patties -- smashed for maximum crust
  • Crispy meat-skirt edges -- the defining texture
  • Soft bun -- intentional contrast to crunchy patty
  • American cheese -- melted across both patties
  • No customization -- ordered exactly as described
  • Beef-tallow fries -- cooked in rendered beef fat
  • CVT soft serve -- LA's premier soft serve brand
The BNSD story

From East Hollywood backyard to Silver Lake landmark.

Shawn Nee is a photographer by trade. In 2017 he started cooking smash burgers in his East Hollywood backyard, hosting invite-only grill-outs that quickly outgrew the yard. Weekly pop-ups at the Glendale Tap bar followed, drawing lines that stretched around the block and an Instagram following that spread the word city-wide.

Within two years of the first backyard cookout, the pop-up had achieved near-mythic status -- reviewers flew in from the U.K. with BNSD on their LA itinerary, and regulars used TaskRabbit to hire line-holders for sold-out weekend pop-ups.

On February 16, 2019, the permanent brick-and-mortar opened at 2388 Glendale Blvd, Unit A -- a small counter-service shop on the Silver Lake/Glendale border. The menu stayed exactly the same as the pop-up.

How to have the best experience at Burgers Never Say Die

Stack size

Order the Regular (Two-Stack)

The house default for first-timers. Two thin smashed patties gives you the full crust-to-soft-interior ratio. The counter sign "Always Order Two" refers to this -- a single patty is intentionally very thin.

Sides

Get the fries and soft serve

The beef-tallow fries ($6.49) and CVT soft serve are not afterthoughts -- they are co-equal to the burger. Multiple reviewers say skipping them is a mistake. Add the cheese sauce ($4.49) for the full fry experience.

Timing

Come on a weekday

Opening-era two-hour waits have normalized, but weekend afternoons still see a line. Weekday midday visits (especially Tuesday-Wednesday) are the quickest. The restaurant is known to sell out of burgers before closing time.

Parking

Free street parking nearby

The 2388 Glendale Blvd location has street parking along Glendale Blvd and side streets. No dedicated lot; arrive a few minutes early to find a spot, especially on weekends.

Check Instagram before going

Hours have shifted since opening. Published hours are roughly noon-8 PM on weekdays and noon-11:30 PM Weds-Sun, but BNSD updates hours and closures on Instagram (@burgersneversaydie). A quick check before driving over is worth it.

What are the hours for Burgers Never Say Die?

Published hours are generally Monday–Tuesday noon–8 PM and Wednesday–Sunday noon–11:30 PM, though hours have varied since opening. The restaurant is known for selling out early when lines are long. Check their Instagram (@burgersneversaydie) or call (323) 922-6161 for current hours before visiting.

What are the fries like at Burgers Never Say Die?

The fries are cooked in beef tallow, rendering them exceptionally crispy on the outside with a fluffy interior. They are served in an ample bag and are widely praised alongside the burgers. Cheese sauce (Velveeta-style dip, $4.49) can be ordered separately for dipping. Multiple reviewers compare them favorably to McDonald's fries, calling them 'McD's-like, in a much better way.'

Is there soft serve ice cream at Burgers Never Say Die?

Yes. Burgers Never Say Die serves CVT Soft Serve, the well-regarded Los Angeles soft-serve brand. It is considered a must-order alongside the burger and fries. Pricing is not fixed on a public menu; confirm on-site. CVT Soft Serve is known for consistently high-quality, dense soft serve.

What is the history of Burgers Never Say Die?

Burgers Never Say Die was created by Shawn Nee, who began selling smash burgers from his East Hollywood backyard in 2017, with weekly pop-up appearances at the Glendale Tap bar. The pop-up grew rapidly through word of mouth and Instagram, drawing hundreds of fans and occasional two-hour waits. One fan reportedly flew from the U.K. with BNSD on her itinerary; another hired someone via TaskRabbit to hold her place in line. The permanent brick-and-mortar at 2388 Glendale Blvd opened February 2019.

How does Burgers Never Say Die compare to In-N-Out and Shake Shack?

All three are widely cited as top burger destinations, but the style differs significantly. In-N-Out uses a smash-adjacent griddle method with a fresh-never-frozen 100% beef patty and charges under $5 for a Double-Double. Shake Shack uses a thicker hand-formed patty at around $9–$10 for a ShackBurger. Burgers Never Say Die's Regular at $11.99 is the priciest of the three for a base burger, but its ultra-thin smashed patties with maximum crust are a different textural experience. BNSD is deliberately minimal: one burger style, no substitutions, no frills. In-N-Out offers 'Animal Style' customization; Shake Shack offers extensive topping options.

Is Burgers Never Say Die worth the price and the wait?

The consensus across Time Out LA, The Infatuation, LA Mag, and hundreds of Yelp and Tripadvisor reviews is yes — for burger enthusiasts it is considered one of the best smash burgers in Los Angeles. The patties achieve a maximum caramelized crust rarely found at other spots. The wait and price have improved since the 2019 opening frenzy; weekday midday visits now see manageable lines. Most reviewers say the Regular (two-stack) is the right order; the house sign says 'Always Order Two' for good reason — the single-patty is very thin.
