About Pink's Hot Dogs

The hot dog stand that has fed Hollywood for over 85 years.

Paul and Betty Pink started selling hot dogs from a cart on La Brea Ave in 1939 for ten cents each. They borrowed $50 to buy the cart. Paul Pink would later say they almost didn't open because he was afraid no one would buy hot dogs in Los Angeles — he was spectacularly wrong.

In the 1940s, Orson Welles reportedly ate 18 hot dogs at Pink's in a single sitting. It is one of many legends attached to the stand, whose walls are covered with photos of the celebrities who have visited over more than eight decades.

Pink's remains family-owned and operated. The stand moved into a permanent location at 709 N La Brea but hasn't moved since. The chili sauce recipe hasn't changed. The line hasn't gone away. Pink's is one of the very few original street-food operations from 1930s Los Angeles still standing and still serving at the same corner.

The celebrity-named dogs (the Ozzy, the Lord of the Rings Dog, the Martha Stewart) are popular novelty orders.

What is Pink's chili sauce?

Pink's house chili sauce is a proprietary recipe that Paul and Betty Pink developed when they opened the stand in 1939. It is a meat-based chili sauce — thinner than Texas-style chili, more of a sauce than a stew — specifically designed to top a hot dog. The recipe remains a closely guarded family secret after more than 85 years.

Is there always a long line at Pink's Hot Dogs?

Yes — a line is essentially guaranteed at Pink's, especially on weekends and evenings. Wait times of 20 to 45 minutes are common; during peak tourist season or late-night, the line can stretch to an hour. Pink's is famous for its line — it has become part of the experience. The walls inside are covered with celebrity photos.

Is Pink's Hot Dogs kid-friendly?

Yes. Pink's is an outdoor stand with a casual, festive atmosphere that welcomes all ages. The menu is hot dog-centric with some burger options, and the atmosphere is easygoing. The long line can test young children's patience, but the experience is very family-friendly once you reach the counter.
