Quick answers

What is Lambert's Cafe known for?

The four things visitors most commonly ask about Lambert's Cafe -- answered at a glance.

Most iconic item
Throwed Rolls

Hot yeast rolls thrown to you by servers -- included with every meal since 1976.

Top entree
Chicken Fried Steak

House-battered beef steak smothered in cream gravy -- Lambert's most-ordered plate.

Best pass-around
Fried Okra

Cornmeal-breaded, golden-fried, passed tableside in cast-iron skillets. Complimentary.

Top dessert

The pass-arounds

Lambert's pass-around sides -- what they are and how they work

Pass-arounds are Lambert's most distinctive feature after the rolls: complimentary side dishes carried around the dining room in large pots and skillets by servers throughout your meal. Every table gets them. No upcharge. No limit.

Lambert's servers circulate the dining room continuously during meal service, carrying cast-iron skillets of fried okra, pots of black-eyed peas, bowls of macaroni & tomatoes, fried potatoes & onions, and white beans. When they reach your table, they spoon a generous helping onto your plate -- or a side dish -- at no charge. You can ask for more on any pass.

The pass-arounds are Lambert's way of delivering the full Southern "dinner on the grounds" experience: family-style abundance, rustic sides, and hospitality. They also make the wait for your entree fly by -- you are never sitting with nothing to eat at Lambert's.

Pass-around selections may vary by season and location. Fried okra and macaroni & tomatoes are the most consistently available.

  • Fried Okra -- cornmeal-breaded, cast-iron fried, golden
  • Black-Eyed Peas -- slow-simmered with pork seasoning
  • Macaroni & Tomatoes -- elbow mac in tomato broth
  • Fried Potatoes & Onions -- pan fried until golden
  • White Beans -- great northern beans, simply seasoned
  • All pass-arounds are complimentary with every meal
The roll-throwing tradition

How the throwed rolls work -- and how the tradition started

Lambert's Cafe has been "The Home of Throwed Rolls" since 1976. Here is the story, and what to expect when you visit.

The roll-throwing tradition started in 1976. The dining room was packed, a server could not get through the crowd to deliver rolls to a waiting table, and a regular customer reportedly shouted: "Throw the dang thing!" The server did. A dining tradition was born.

Today, Lambert's servers circle the dining room throughout meal service carrying baskets of freshly baked hot yeast rolls -- large, soft, pillowy, and buttery. When you want one, you catch the server's eye and raise your hand. They throw. The roll travels across the dining room -- sometimes 20 to 30 feet -- and lands (ideally) in your outstretched hands. Missing is part of the fun.

Every table receives a small crock of sorghum molasses for dipping. The rolls are included with every meal, there is no limit, and they come out hot all day. First-timers typically receive a shorter, softer toss; regulars and brave kids can request a full-across-the-room throw.

Rolls are baked fresh throughout service. During peak hours, the wait between passes is usually under five minutes.

Visitor tips

How to get the most out of a Lambert's Cafe visit

Wait times

Arrive early or go on a weekday

Weekend waits at Sikeston can reach 1 to 2 hours. Arriving at opening or visiting Monday through Thursday cuts the wait dramatically. There is typically covered outdoor seating for the queue.

No reservations

Walk-in only

Lambert's does not accept reservations at any location. First-come, first-served is the rule. The wait is part of the experience -- regulars bring lawn chairs and snacks for the queue.

Portions

Expect very large plates

Lambert's portions are notoriously generous. Most guests leave with a to-go box. Sharing an entree is common and generally accepted. Factor this into your order -- you will not leave hungry.

Cash & cards

Bring a method of payment

Lambert's accepts major credit and debit cards at all locations. Cash is also accepted. Prices are not posted online -- ask your server when seated for the current menu board.

Kids

Great for families

The roll-throwing is a hit with children of all ages. The lively, loud atmosphere is kid-tolerant. A smaller kids' menu with lighter portions is typically available -- confirm when you arrive.

Dietarily

Vegetarian and other needs

Many of the pass-arounds and sides are vegetarian (fried okra, macaroni & tomatoes, black-eyed peas are vegan). Several sandwiches are vegetarian. Gluten-free and allergen options are limited -- call ahead if you have serious dietary restrictions.

About Lambert's Cafe

The Home of Throwed Rolls -- a Southern institution since 1942.

Earl Lambert Sr. opened Lambert's Cafe in Sikeston, Missouri in 1942 as a simple family diner. The restaurant remained a regional favorite for decades before the accidental invention that would define it: in 1976, a server threw a hot roll across a crowded dining room and sparked a tradition that has continued every day since.

Today Lambert's is operated by the third generation of the Lambert family. The formula is unchanged: massive portions of Southern comfort food, unlimited throwed rolls with sorghum molasses, and continuous pass-arounds of fried okra, black-eyed peas, macaroni & tomatoes, and more -- all included in the price of your entree. It remains one of the most distinctive dining experiences in the American South and Midwest, and one of the most visited road-trip restaurants in the country.
