Joe & the Juice was founded in 2002 by Kaspar Basse, a former elite athlete, who opened the first location on Ny Østergade in central Copenhagen, Denmark. Basse envisioned a juice bar concept that blended the energy of a nightclub with the health focus of a wellness brand — a combination that quickly resonated with urban professionals. The brand expanded across Scandinavia throughout the 2000s before pushing into the United Kingdom, United States, and Middle East markets.
Today the chain operates more than 500 stores worldwide, with locations spanning Europe, North America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Stores are typically found in high-street locations, airports, transport hubs, and commercial districts. Swedish private equity firm Valedo Partners acquired a majority stake in 2013, and U.S. growth equity firm General Atlantic made a significant investment in 2016, becoming the majority shareholder in 2023. Global headquarters remain in Copenhagen, with regional offices in New York City, Paris, and London.
Joe & the Juice is known as much for its atmosphere as its menu. In-store staff — called "juicers" — are trained not only in preparation technique but in an energetic, social service style that sets the brand apart from typical café chains. The menu centers on fresh cold-pressed juices, functional smoothies fortified with vitamins and adaptogens, specialty espresso drinks, matcha beverages, and a focused selection of made-to-order sandwiches including the cult-favorite Tunacado.
