About El Tarasco

A Michoacan family's American restaurant dream, since 1969.

Moises and Celia Palomo emigrated from Michoacan, Mexico, where Moises worked as a migrant laborer harvesting crops while saving money for a restaurant. In 1969, the couple invested their savings into a grill and a counter on Rosecrans Ave in Manhattan Beach -- a risk many discouraged. Celia ran the kitchen and gradually expanded the menu. By 1977 they opened a second location in El Segundo, still in operation today.

The restaurant is named after the Tarascan (Purepecha) indigenous tribe of Michoacan, honoring the family's regional heritage. The food reflects that heritage: authentic Michoacan recipes, handmade tortillas, slow-cooked carnitas, and a chile relleno tradition that predates most SoCal Mexican chains by decades.

The Jr. Super Deluxe Burrito -- the most popular item -- was invented around 1970 by one of the Palomo daughters as a personal experiment. It went on the menu and became the dish El Tarasco is known for. Celia passed away in 1997; Moises in 1998. Their family continues to run the chain of 12 locations today.
