Donatos Pizza was founded in 1963 by Jim Grote, who bought a small Columbus, Ohio pizza shop for $1,300 and set out to make the best thin-crust pizza in the city. The chain grew steadily through Ohio and neighboring states, and in 1999 McDonald's Corporation briefly acquired Donatos, hoping to diversify its portfolio. McDonald's sold it back to the Grote family in 2003, and the brand has remained family-owned and Ohio-rooted ever since.
