About

About Donatos Pizza

Donatos Pizza was founded in 1963 by Jim Grote, who bought a small Columbus, Ohio pizza shop for $1,300 and set out to make the best thin-crust pizza in the city. His guiding philosophy was simple: cover every slice with toppings all the way to the edge — no bare crust, no empty calories. That commitment became the brand's defining trait and the source of the memorable tagline "No Empty Calories."

The chain grew steadily through Ohio and neighboring states, and in 1999 McDonald's Corporation briefly acquired Donatos, hoping to diversify its portfolio. McDonald's sold it back to the Grote family in 2003, and the brand has remained family-owned and Ohio-rooted ever since. Today Donatos operates 150+ locations in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia, and other Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic markets, with an expanding presence through restaurant-within-a-restaurant partnerships at select Red Robin locations nationwide.

The menu has expanded well beyond pizza to include oven-baked subs, fresh salads, shareable appetizers, wings, and desserts, but the thin-crust pizza — loaded edge-to-edge with more than 100 toppings available — remains the star. Donatos was also among the first major chains to introduce cauliflower-crust and vegan-crust options, underscoring its reputation for innovation without sacrificing the serious, no-shortcuts approach that Jim Grote established more than six decades ago.
