About

About Anh and Chi

Anh and Chi opened in April 2016 at 3388 Main Street in Vancouver, stepping into the space that once housed Pho Hoàng — the Nguyễn family's Vietnamese restaurant that is credited as the first pho specialty house in the city. Founded by siblings Vincent Nguyễn (Chef & Owner) and Amélie Nguyễn (Co-founder), the restaurant is deeply rooted in family history: their grandparents Hoàng and Lý Nguyên arrived as Vietnamese boat people in 1980, and their mother, Chef Lý Nguyên — now Executive Chef — grew up working in her own mother's café in Saigon.

Rather than simply preserving the past, Anh and Chi reimagines the family's recipes for a contemporary audience while honouring their origins. The menu spans crispy cha gio and fresh salad rolls, signature noodle soups with 12–18 hour broths, fire-grilled share plates, and inventive cocktails that trace Vietnam's cultural timeline from pre-1975 French-influenced flavours to post-war Vietnamese identity. The restaurant earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand — awarded for excellent food at moderate prices — every year from 2022 through 2024, and has been named Best Vietnamese Restaurant by both Georgia Straight and Vancouver Magazine multiple times.

Beyond the dining room, Anh and Chi has built a community-focused reputation through its Reservation by Donation programme, which has raised over $500,000 for local charities to date. The siblings also launched Good Thief, a sister venue in Vancouver, and produce a line of Mẹ's artisan sauces — including the gold-winning Mẹ's Chilli Fish Sauce from the 2022 Made in Vancouver Awards — making the family's flavours available for home cooks across Canada.

What is the Pho Hoang at Anh and Chi?

Pho Hoang is the restaurant's signature pho, named in tribute to the founders' father, Hoàng Nguyên. It honours the family's original Pho Hoàng restaurant — credited as Vancouver's first pho specialty house — using a broth slow-simmered for 12–18 hours. 'Number 37' is another beloved item carried over from that original restaurant.

What is the Ham Chơi happy hour?

What is the Cari Cua at Anh and Chi?

Cari Cua is Anh and Chi's whole Dungeness crab curry — a whole BC Dungeness crab (approximately 2.5 lbs) simmered in a rich lemongrass coconut curry. It is offered at market price and must be pre-ordered at least 48 hours in advance via eat@anhandchi.com. It is designed for parties of 2–4 people and is considered one of the restaurant's showpiece dishes.
